Boys Basketball Ends Season in 4th

Molokai High Boys Basketball team closed their season with a fourth place finish in the Maui Interscholastic League Championships. 

“Our boys made so much improvement through the season despite all the challenges,” said Head Coach Kalei Adolpho. 

In the semifinals, Molokai fell to Maui Prep 61-22, followed a quarterfinal win over Haleakala Waldorf 50-40. In the battle for third place, Lanai beat Molokai 76-53. 

“Seniors Namaka, Owen and Elijah represented Molokai with pride through their high school careers as athletes and have set a great example for the younger boys. They will be missed,” said Adolpho.…

Understanding Molokai’s Electric Grid

According to Hawaiian Electric this month, 86 percent of Molokai homes and businesses are powered by the diesel powered generators at Palaʻau, and the other 14 percent of our energy needs are met by the 500 rooftop solar systems on the island.

This and other information was discussed on Feb. 16 at the first energy briefing held via Zoom by the Molokai Clean Energy Hui (MCEH), in partnership with the Molokai community, Sust’ainable Molokai and Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI). This briefing is part of the community education and input phase of the Molokai Community Energy Resilience Action Plan (Molokai CERAP).…

Learning Endeavors is offering a free Coastal Camp for grades four to six during spring break. Campers will visit two coastal areas and engage in science experiments, art projects, and stewardship activities!

The two-day Molokai Coastal Camp is part of the Champions of Coastal Resilience (CCR) program, which seeks to develop climate stewards that care for our coastal communities. Na Heona Molokai (Artists of Molokai) is a group creating an exhibition titled “No Stop Light: Molokai” for the 3,600 square foot Downtown Art Center in Honolulu, in May 2022. In the coming months, we will introduce each artist.

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Carol Rocha.  I grew up in Northern California.  My family is from the Azores, Portugal.  

What is your art form?

I am a sculptor.  I owned a wood shop for years in California that produced one of a kind reclaimed wood furniture.  Using wood for sculpting and creating art has been most of my professional art experience. …

Strategy for Economic Prosperity

The county is in the midst of updating its fourth Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS), “an economic roadmap to diversify and strengthen regional economies,” for publication later this year.  

This update occurs every five years, as a result of the Economic Development Administration (EDA) Reauthorization Act of 2004. Maui County has completed three CEDS, in 2004, 2010 and 2016. 

The CEDS is intended to create a local-based strategy for economic development and an environment for economic prosperity and resilience for people and businesses, and there are also great options like financial advisors which can be used as well.…

Grant for Local Food Distribution

Sustʻainable Molokai recently received a $34,375 grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This award will support the efforts of Project Hoʻokuʻikahi Aloha Molokai, which distributes locally produced food to Molokai residents through our island’s 22 food pantries.

This project began as a hui of community organizations that rallied together to provide food for our Molokai residents during the outbreak of the pandemic. The name Hoʻokuʻikahi Aloha Molokai means “uniting in love for our people of Molokai.” These and other efforts are covered in this short video, Island in the Pandemic, created by Quazifilms’ Matt Yamashita, which premiered on Oct 16, 2020.…

Girls Basketball Ends Season in Third

The Molokai High Girls Basketball season closed their season two weeks ago after taking third at the Maui Interscholastic League tournament. Molokai lost to Seabury Hall 47-15 in the semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 10, and Seabury went on to beat Lanai for the championship and the only MIL Division II team to represent this year at states.

Molokai got the win over Hana 36-25 on Friday to claim the third place title. Leila Hooper-Phifer led the Lady Farmers with 13 points and Lia-Chae Meyer had 11.

“It’s always tough not to come out of the MIL tournament with a win in the first round,” said first year Head Coach Kaimana Kahale.…

Learn about Preliminary Water Use and Demand for Molokai’s water systems. At two meetings open to Molokai residents, we will be presenting water use information for public and private water systems on the island, our methodology for projecting future water demand, and sharing our preliminary water demand projections. The Molokai Water Use and Development Plan is being updated by a collaboration between Townscape, Inc., an environmental and community planning company, and the County of Maui Department of Water Supply, Water Resources and Planning Division.

Moli Checks Out Molokai

Last month, Molokai Land Trust’s Anapuka site had a special visitor: a Moli, or Layson Albatross, that landed several times in the area. It’s the first documented landing of the species at the Molokai site since 2017 – and it’s viewed as an auspicious sign that the Moli may be making a home at Anapuka in the next few years.

The Moli landed at the organization’s “social attraction site,” which features decoy Moli in an effort to attract the real birds to the area. The decoys have now showed success, along with Molokai Land Trust’s work to restore the Anapuka dune ecosystem, remove invasive species, repopulate native plants and install predator-proof fencing to create a safe haven for Moli and other ground-nesting seabirds, according to MLT Executive Director Butch Haase.…
