The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is excited to collaborate with the East-West Center (EWC). The EWC Gallery’s April exhibition “Living Legacies: Paintings and Performances of Bali” featured both visual and performing arts of Batuan, Bali. Most of the paintings highlighted in the EWC Gallery exhibition were by artist I Madé Budi and his son I Madé Moja.

Moja is a painter, dancer, puppet maker and shadow-play artist from the village of Batuan, a traditional arts village in Bali known for its classical music and dance, fine woodcarving, and unique painting style. Batuan-style painting is unique from other regional styles and particularly famous for its darker color tones and magical themes.…

Statewide Craftsmen Exhibition

Hawaii Craftsmen News Release 

Hawaii Craftsmen is excited to announce that the 2022 exhibition will travel from Oahu to Maui.  The exhibition will begin on Oahu at the Downtown Art Center in mid-October, and then travel to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center Schafer Gallery through December. Molokai artists are invited to submit their work, and jurying will be held in person on Molokai in August. 

The 2022 juror will be Neida Bangerter, who is the director of the world-class Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC). As an artist, educator, curator and gallery director, Ms. Bangerter is uniquely qualified to bring her range of expertise, as well as her sensitivity to the tradition of contemporary Hawaii craft to the jurying process.…

MHS Student Gets Citizen-Scholar Award

Last week, the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, in partnership with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and the Department of Education, hosted its 18th annual Citizen-Scholar Awards luncheon at the Prince Waikiki and distributed more than $60,000 in scholarships to 42 public high school seniors. Among them, was Molokai High School student Paige Fukuoka.

With no regard for his own safety, he discarded his jacket and some of his equipment and jumped into the water. He did not know who the people were who were struggling in the water. He did not know why they were risking their lives by trying to cross the river. He did not know whether they were trying to get to a better life or were attempting to smuggle drugs into the USA. All he knew was that they were in deep trouble. So, he jumped into the water to save them.…

Congrats, Artists

I would like to extend a hearty congratulations and best of luck to the Na Heona (artists) of Molokai who are participating in a group exhibition called, “No Stop Light: Molokai.”

This is the largest group exhibition by Molokai artists in Honolulu at the Downtown Art Center during the month of May. This is an exhibition featuring the works of contemporary and traditional artists, with sculpture, fiber, wood, ceramic, photography, painting and jewelry created on Molokai. 

The participants are: Arabella Ark, Dan Bennett, PF Bentley, Anna Fuernsteiner, Patti Golebieski, Ikaika Bishaw-Juario, U’i Kahue Cabating, Victor Lopez, Kim Markham, Carol Rocha, Kala’e Tangonan and Nan Walters.…

St. Damien Church Bell

Tempting to ring and fun to hear but just letting you all know, especially the kids that hang around Kaunakakai town, that the bell at St. Damien Church is not a toy to play with.  We got scolding too growing up, not only from Father, but someone from the Pe’elua ohana back then because that bell can be heard from anywhere in town and lower Ranch Camp. It is rung only when we are called to prayer, when the Eucharist is being consecrated at Mass, at funerals/All Souls Day in memory of those who passed, weddings and special occasions like Christmas and Easter when the Gloria is sung. …

Water Use Plan Pop-Ups

As a part of our community outreach for the Molokai Island Water Use and Development Plan, Townscape, Inc., consultant to the Maui County Department of Water Supply, will have staff on island to conduct in-person outreach. 

We will be setting up a booth pop-up style at a variety of locations during the third week of May. The purpose of the outreach is threefold. We want to reach out to folks who have not been able to participate in the virtual meetings. We will share information about the work that has been done so far on the plan. And we want to better understand community sentiments and values for the island’s water resources.…

Historic Ruling to Restore Kawela Stream Flow

In a landmark decision last week, the state Commission on Water Resource Management unanimously ruled to restore flow levels to Kawela Stream and four others in the area, after they had been almost fully diverted for more than a century. It’s a huge victory for community members who advocated through group Molokai No Ka Heke, which filed a formal request for stream restoration in 2019. 

“After over a hundred years of Kawela waters being diverted across the island and wasted, we finally said enough is enough,” said Molokai No Ka Heke member Walter Ritte.  “The big ranching and ag operations are gone, and we couldn’t just sit and watch this precious water be thrown away.”…

The Farmers were named Maui Interscholastic League Division II champions last Friday after an unbeaten 8-0 season. They cinched the title with a 7-0 win over Seabury Hall in the MIL tournament final at Maehara Stadium in Wailuku. 

Head Coach Keahi Rawlins was happy for the victory but is keeping his eye on the next prize: states. 

“Coming home with the gold and a couple more wins,” he said Friday. “These boys all work hard and I’m happy for their accomplishments. We still got a lot of work ahead and we got to get working come Monday to prepare for states.…
