Conservation Land Acquisition

Five parcels in the Mākolelau ahupua’a of Molokai, totaling 1,045 acres, have been purchased for land conservation and restoration. The acquisition was made by DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), using funding from a $1.8 million grant from USFWS and more than $600,000 in private donations to TNC. 

The area represents part of Molokai’s Sole Source Aquifer, designated by the State Commission on Water Resource Management (CWRM) as a Priority 1 Watershed, according to DLNR. The ahupua‘a’s higher elevations contain intact native forests, the protection of which contributes to generation of fresh water supplies and reduction of erosion that damages the South shore coral reefs. …

Fr. Guerrini Departs Molokai Catholic Parish

Father Brian Guerrini has served as the Catholic priest for Molokai’s St. Damien Catholic Parish for the past three years. Now, his time on Molokai is drawing to a close, with his departure scheduled for Oct. 1. 

Guerrini of the Priests of the Sacred Hearts, the same order as St. Damien, has been on Molokai since the fall of 2019. His time on the island has been marked heavily by the COVID pandemic. 

“The last three years have been rough still trying to come out of the pandemic,” said Guerrini.

Football Expands Horizons

The Farmers expanded their 11-man football experience two weeks ago at an exhibition game against Waialua in Oahu. 

 The team played with power through the game with a final score of 22-14 Waialua. Even with the loss, the boys represented Molokai well. According to Nichol Kahale, the last time Molokai played Waialua at Waialua High School was in the 1950s.

“Happy that this is finally happening,” Kahale shared on social media. “…In the 1950s my dad, Larry Helm, Uncle Greg Helm, Kimberly Ku’uipo, and Tomie Helm played football against my father-in-law Larry Kahale. My dad shared with me that their shoulder pads were made of cardboard.”…

Giveaway Hits Fifth Year

This past Friday and Saturday at the Lanikeha Community Center in Ho`olehua, Edee Silva of Oahu and the Hui Malama Ohana organization, founded by Silva and her husband, put on another successful giveaway. For the fifth year, Silva and her team have worked to bring a 40-foot container full of donations from Oahu to Molokai. 

The biggest change this year? “We brought a lot of new stuff this time,” says Silva.

This year, each family gets one big item ticket to try to win new TVs, bikes, rice pots and more. Also, each family gets up to 10 tickets and 15 minutes to choose from a huge selection of clothes, shoes, cooking equipment and furniture, among others. …

Learn about Integrated Pest Management Benefits, and diagnosis, control and prevention of Banana Bunchy Top Virus, also known as BBTV. A workshop will be hosted by the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) Molokai Cooperative Extension Service. The workshop, Benefits of IPM Practices and Sustainable Strategies for Banana Bunchy Top Virus Control-Prevention, will be held at the UH Molokai Extension Farm at 652 Huaai Road (just past Kumu Farms) on Monday, Sept. 26, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Volleyball Shows Spirit at Home

Last Friday night, Sept. 16, the Barn was decked out in Senior Night decorations and Farmer’s spirit. It was a close game between the Lady Farmers and Maui Preparatory Pueos. Molokai High brought effort and support that pushed the game to five sets. 

It started rough for the Lady Farmers as Maui Preparatory took the first set, 25-13. Bouncing back, Molokai’s girls took the second set, 25-20. Taking it away, Pueos accomplished the next set, 25-19, and the Farmers tied it up, winning the fourth set, 25-21. The fifth set ended with a 15-12, giving Maui Preparatory the win.…

Molokai High SCC Hones In on Student Success

The Molokai High School Community Council (SCC) held its first meeting on Aug. 24 on Google Meets and discussed topics such as the new MHS website launch, the shift to College and Career Academies, and student successes to kick off the new school year. The meeting was attended by the stakeholders of the school community: two students, Quedin Bumatay and Aiko Kanemitsu, three parents, Jennifer Ainoa, Tiare Holm, and Kahea Tancayo, one community member, Nate Oswald, four teachers, Ric Ornellas, John Vaughn, Diane Mokuau, and Laura Peterson, and the principal, Dr. Katina Soares.

Free Spay and Neuter Clinic

The Molokai Humane Society thanks Juston Childs, MPD Animal Control Officer, for his informative and really important letter in the Aug. 31 issue. It covered the upcoming free spay and neuter clinic, and the importance of everyone contributing to controlling the pet population on our island. It also discussed the importance of microchipping to help pets safely and easily reunite with families, and the law of dog licensing, done at the DMV, which is discounted with proof of spay and neuter.

Kenneth Kenji Okimoto

Kenneth Kenji OkimotoKenneth Kenji Okimoto 76, of Waianae, Hawaii passed away peacefully on October 20, 2020.  He was born on June 21, 1944 to David and Betty Okimoto. 

Ken was Chairman of the Board of The Waianae Store, Nanakuli Super, and Friendly Market Center, and he retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1994.

Ken is survived by his wife Margaret; sons Kurt (Christy), Kyle (Pamela), Kris (Michelle), and Kit (Evelyn); 8 grandchildren; and sisters Gail Okimoto, Janis Lenox, and Lynne (Terry) Copperman.  He is preceded in death by his parents, infant brother James, and sister Janet Okimoto.
