Molokai CERT Training

County of Maui News Release

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

Using the training learned in the Hybrid CERT Basic Training and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Molokai CERT training will take place in person on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for skills assessment, and Saturday, Feb. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for skills assessment and field exercise. You must attend all 18 hours of the in-person skills assessment and field exercise portion of the Hybrid CERT Basic Training to receive your graduation certificate.

Participants learn how to identify and anticipate hazards; reduce fire hazards in the home and workplace; extinguish small fires; assist emergency responders; conduct light search and rescue; set up medical treatment areas; and apply basic medical techniques. Those who should take CERT training include people interested in taking an active role in hometown preparedness, neighborhood watch groups, community leaders, parents, communities of faith and members of clubs and civic organizations.

The new Hybrid CERT Basic Training is a 30-hour program, consisting of 12 hours online, self-paced curriculum (offered in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese) and 18 hours in-person skills assessment and field exercises. Sponsored by the Maui County Emergency Management Agency, CERT is taught by Maui Fire Department instructors and is provided free of charge under a Homeland Security grant.

For previously trained CERT volunteers, email your CERT Basic Training certificate to cert@mauicounty.gov and you will be placed on our Active distribution list to receive information about on-going CERT training, monthly CERT meetings, and CERT news.
