Mixed Results for Tennis, Track and Field

Track and Field

The Molokai High Track and Field team competed on Maui last weekend, with Sehja Pedro placing first in Girls Discus with a throw of 98-1. Preston Pascua-Kahookano placed second in Boys Shotput as well as Discus.

Head Coach Micah Buchanan was happy with his team’s performance.

“The athletes did great on Friday,” he said. “Our first timers did awesome and we had a lot of personal bests. Preston… made states for shot put and discus and Sehja… had the best throw for the girls for discus.”

Buchanan added that Keaolewa Davis-Mendija did great for the first time in high jump and was second in his heat of the 100 meter run.

Tennis

After strong results at home two weeks ago, the Boys Tennis team fell to Kamehameha Maui 3-2 on Maui on Friday and 4-1 against King Kekaulike on Saturday. The Girls Tennis team came home without a win Friday or Saturday, defeated 5-0 by Kamehameha Maui on Friday and 4-0 by King Kekaulike on Saturday.

Despite the losses, Head Coach Amanda Labriola looked to the positives.  “The girls played extremely well Friday especially our third singles, Paula Maroto. King Wong played his first ever match this weekend keeping the score very close on Friday and winning his default match on Saturday,” she said. “Both our first and second single boys won their matches on Friday and our first doubles went into a third round and got very intense for the team to watch.”

She said overall, the student athletes “played their best and mostly had fun,” which is she said is hopes for as a coach.
