Middle School Students Excited to Get Spooky

Community contributed by Kui Adolpho, Molokai Middle School

Halloween has evolved from our childhood days of dressing up as our favorite cartoon or movie character and going from home to home in our neighborhood to collect sweets. Although still a great part of the Halloween tradition, trick-or-treating has evolved to include an elaborate presentation of one’s home. There are intricate outdoor decorations, the do-it-yourself-ers who spend months planning ghoulish surprises and a multitude of choices in the delivery of candy to children. Haunted houses are becoming ever popular, and for the Halloween super-fans, a must.

This year, the haunted house bug has hit our Molokai Middle School (MMS) campus as we gear up for two frightening nights of fun and Halloween terror. Not for the faint-hearted, MMS will be presenting its first School of Terror Event on Oct. 28 and 29 from 7 to 10 p.m., where our guests will meet at the MHMS cafeteria before entering our spooky world. Admission fees at the door: Ages 10 and under – free (with accompanied paid adult), ages 10 to 18 – $3 and ages 18 and older– $5, includes dinner and a movie during waiting period.

Each of our MMS students will receive a free entry ticket to the haunted school that will be sent home with them on Wednesday, Oct. 19, so parents/guardians be on the lookout. Volunteers will also receive free entry. At our MMS Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 22 we will be pre-selling tickets: ages 10 to 18 – $1 and ages 18 and older – $3, that day only! We will also be giving away four tickets through our school’s Facebook (facebook.com/MolokaiMiddleSchool) to the individual who, you must “like” us first, answers the posted School of Terror question best, to be judged by our students.

Currently we are searching for community members and parents to be part of our haunted event to assist students with props, scenery, decorations, set-up, scare-acting and special effects. For all those interested, there will be a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. in the MHMS library to discuss the details of this haunted school. We will be giving a detailed description of each scene, roles and Halloween props needed to fulfill our School of Terror. For further details or if you’d like to participate but can’t be at this mandatory meeting for volunteers contact the MMS PCNC Kui Adolpho via email caroline_adolpho@notes.k12.hi.us or via phone 567-6940 ext. 226. We’d like to get a head count of our volunteers so assignments and roles may be determined with ample time for planning and rehearsals.

Heads will roll, there will be surprises at every turn and corner, and we can assure you that screams of terror will be heard at this spooky event! We look forward to scaring you… we mean, seeing you there!
