It’s a new season of fall sports at Molokai High School and this year’s Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are getting ready for their seasons to begin. The boys are coached by longtime Head Coach Ghandarva Mahina Hou Ross and the girls are coached by Kabbie Bicoy-Juario.
Bicoy-Juario excited for her team’s season to begin.
“We have 13 runners this year for the Lady Farmers and most of them are returnees,” she said. “We just started our season preparation and they all know there’s a lot to work to do but I know they will do well. We have great team spirit having most of my runners back.”
Though the girls’ team has a lot of return athletes, that’s not the case for the boys’ side.
“We have a young team with mostly new runners,” said Ross. “Top returning runner is Alex Mawae, who was alternate for states last year and hopefully can qualify for states this year.”
The teams will start the Maui Interscholastic League season on Sept. 15 at Keopuolani Park on Maui before returning home and hosting a MIL race at Molokai’s Ironwood Golf Course on Sept. 29. Molokai will then travel to King Kekaulike for the last race of the regular season on Oct. 6. The MIL Cross Country championships are back at King Kekaulike on Oct. 20, followed by the State Championships on Oct. 27 on Oahu.
The Girls’ team will hold their second annual Fun Run fundraiser on Sept. 8 at Ironwood Hills Golf Course starting at 3 p.m. The Fun Run will be a three-mile course or 1.5 mile walk, open to ages 11 and up. There is a $20 entry donation and all proceeds benefit the Girls Cross Country team. Contact Bicoy-Juario for more info at 336-0731.
