Maunaloa Elementary School News Release

On April 13, the campus of Maunaloa Elementary School blossomed with new life as the community gathered for the formal dedication of its latest landmark: a vibrant mural by artist Perry Buchalter.

The mural is more than just paint on a wall; it is a living “bridge to our past.” It brings to life the moʻolelo (stories) of Maunaloa, specifically those captured in the Mele Kāhea and Mele Komo composed in June 2021 by community member Nāhulu Maioho.

The dedication ceremony highlighted the deep connection between the school and the winds, rains, and landmarks of the West End. The imagery reflects the poetic lines of Maioho’s mele, such as the Kumumaʻomaʻo breeze, the Nāulu rain, and the swirling currents at Lāʻau Point.

“This mural serves as a bridge to our past, honoring the traditions and stories that shape our Maunaloa community,” the school shared during the unveiling. By translating these oral traditions into a visual masterpiece, Buchalter has ensured that the “child who travels on the long road” (ke kama hele ma ke ala loa) will always have a sense of place and belonging at MES.

The mural also references the storied “roadway of Kihaapiʻilani,” which was historically lined with white shells to guide travelers at night. Today, the mural serves a similar purpose—guiding the next generation of “Roadrunners” by keeping the history of Maunaloa visible and vibrant.

The dedication was a celebration of collaboration between the arts and the community. As the Mele Komo invites, “Ae, Aloha mai e” (Yes, Greeting and Aloha to you), the new mural stands as a permanent welcome to all who enter the school grounds, reminding them of the lush splendor and rich history of the slopes of Kopala Hill.
