MAC Show Approaching

MAC News Release

Many of you have experienced lots of “free time” in these past few months due to the stay at home orders. We hope that you have been working on your art entries to submit for the 2020 Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Members Show! Due to the ever-changing government restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, the MAC has had to make several adjustments this year. Following are key dates, however please understand that, should the Mayor or Governor require a lockdown or other changes in restrictions, MAC will have to adjust accordingly. Please bear with us!

Sept. 21-27 MAC members may drop off art work at the MAC, by appointment only. Email molokaiartscenter@gmail.com or call 567-9696 for an appointment. Submissions will be accepted by paid staff only and require an entry application for each piece. Late entries will not be accepted.

MAC membership fees must be paid for and up-to-date. MAC members may submit up to a maximum of three works. Art work, completed by the MAC member, must have been created during the years 2018 through 2020. If the work was a collaborative effort, all artists’ names involved in the creation of the piece must be on the entry form.

Maya Lea Portner will still be jurying the entries submitted. Maya is an artist and educator in Honolulu. She earned a BFA (Sculpture) from Washington University School of Art in St. Louis and an MFA in Art (Fibers) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Maya has exhibited nationally in New York City, San Francisco, and St. Louis, MO. As part of her graduate research, Maya spent time at the Museum of Natural History “La Specola” in Florence, Italy, where her work has since been exhibited. Her sculptures were included in the Holland Paper Biennial of 2008 in Den Haag, The Netherlands. Maya has been artist-in-residence internationally: at “Waaw” Residency in Senegal in 2015 and at CHHAAP Baroda Printmaking Studio in Gujurat, India, in 2011. Most recently she participated in the Open Studio Residency 2018 at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. Portner is the 13th recipient of the prestigious Catherine E. B. Cox Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts, awarded biannually by the Honolulu Museum of Art. We are very excited and honored to have Maya jury this year’s MAC Member Show.

Notification of the results will be given the week of Oct. 12. The exhibit will be posted in an online gallery on the MAC website on Nov. 9. The online gallery will be up for two months. Art work may be available for sale by the artist. We look forward to another stellar showcase featuring Molokai artists.
