Lauhala Workshop Part II this Sunday in Hoʻolehua
MAC News Release
The Molokai Arts Center’s Hawaiian Arts Program presents its second Lauhala workshop on Sunday, Feb. 15 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Hoʻolehua Homestead Makeke, at 2240 Lihi Pali Ave behind Molokai High School, mauka, just east of Purdy’s Mac Nut Farm. Register at https://bit.ly/MACHA2026.
The MAC continues its popular HĀ workshops featuring the Lauhala (pandanus) plant. Participants will be taught to weave lauhala into a bracelet. Cultural practitioner Mokihana Paleka Jackson returns this Sunday to share the art of lauhala weaving.
The MAC HĀ 2025-26 Program is a bi-monthly series which promotes cultural arts through ‘aina (land) and mea kanu (that which is planted), utilizing our natural resources. Each month, a cultural practitioner will help participants, keiki through kupuna, craft a product from a specific plant (i.e. kukui, ti, mai’a, lauhala, etc.). One or two workshops per month focuses on a plant, native or canoe. Instruction will include learning about the plant, best practices for growing and caring for the plant, and gathering respectfully and sustainably so that the plant will continue to provide. Young plants may also be available for sale by homesteaders to encourage continuing what is learned.
The Makeke (market) opens at 3pm and runs until 6pm. Come early to shop Tutu’s Treasures, purchase food, desserts, drinks, snacks, produce, plants, and other goodies from homesteaders and our youth entrepreneurs. You are also invited to watch the crafting or play a game of cribbage or konane.
The Molokai Arts Center, in collaboration with Hoʻolehua Homestead Makeke (vendors are Hoʻolehua homesteaders) and Hoʻolehua Homesteaders Association (cultural practitioners), presents this pilot project with the hope that it can expand to other communities to help grow economics for homesteaders. MAC’s HĀ Program is sponsored in part by the County of Maui Office of Economic Development. HĀ workshops are free, but donations are welcome to help sustain MAC programs. Contact HĀ Coordinator Kanoelani Dudoit (808) 213-1179 or MAC executive director Alice Kaahanui at molokaiartsexecdr@gmail.com for more information.
