Join the Choir

Do you enjoy singing but don’t like to sing by yourself in front of crowds? Or perhaps you grew up singing in choirs when you were small and wish you could be in one again? Come and join the Molokai Community Choir, made up of people from all backgrounds and skill levels. We meet once a week on Thursdays from 6-8pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and will start rehearsals for our Christmas season on Thursday, August 1.
The Community Choir started in January and ended the season in June with a successful concert. The skills of the choir members ranged from some who have never sung before and knew nothing about music to those who have sung all their lives and could read music well. As part of our rehearsals, choir members were given tutorials on what notes and rhythms were and how to follow their assigned parts. As the months passed, their knowledge of music grew as did their singing skills, which aided them in learning songs in English, Hawaiian, Italian and Latin languages.
My love for choir urged me to start one on Molokai and share the joy and satisfaction I have experienced with those who also love music. Having been involved with choirs for more than 20 years, I have found that there is something that borders on the Divine when you work with others toward achieving the same goals to uplift those around you.
It doesn’t matter if you have been taking voice lessons all your life or if people tell you that you shouldn’t sing. All that matters is that you love to sing and will do your best as we learn our music for this season. The rest will take care of itself.
If you are new to this choir, please come to the back of the church and follow the signs to the Relief Society room where new member hearings will take place at 5 p.m. Hearings will help us know where your voice will best fit in the choir. Returning members, welcome back and don’t forget to bring a friend. We have a whole slew of songs ready to learn and are excited to see new and old friends alike. If you miss the first practice, you can also join us on Thursday, Aug. 8, and hearings will also be held at 5 p.m. The choir is for adults and children can come with an adult choir member. There is a one-time, non-refundable fee of $20 for music and practice CDs. Any further questions, I can be reached at kristidudoit@gmail.com. Hope to see you Thursday!
