At Arabella Ark’s ceramics studio, you can find unique pottery in shapes, sizes, colors from our changing natural world: vases glazed in pinks and corals like the setting sun; others in deep turquoises and greens like the sea. Many are highlighted with gold leaf like the reflection of sunlight on the rain-forested ravines at her former home in Hana.
Attracted to antiquity, she places elements of Asian temples and clothing on her large-scale teapots and lidded temples. Some of her large clay tablets for wall hanging, called Other Worlds, reflect views of galaxies seen by the Hubble Telescope. She calls herself a dreamer, and many of her pieces are shaped like pillows.
She also has functional, dishwasher safe tableware inspired by the fishpond where she lives and the sea: platters, dinner and salad plates, bowls, and mugs.
Arabella is also a novelist. Five of her books will be available for holiday reading and giving.
“My studio just four miles east of Kaunakakai is always open by appointment,” Ark says. “Simply call 808-658-9616 for a private showing.”
A special invitation goes out to visit for some holiday cheer and sale on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 2376 Kamehameha V Hwy. Don’t pass mile marker 4, turn makai onto long gravel driveway. Guests, please park in front of studio or on highway shoulder.
You can find Arabella and her ceramics almost every week at the Saturday Market at the Molokai Community Health Center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
