Polynesian Voyaging Society News Release

After a week in Waiʻanae engaging with students and community, Hokuleʻa will depart Pokaʻi Bay and return to Sand Island. As the crew heads out of the bay, they will honor the late Twinkle Borge with an oli, pu and flower drop. The Hawaiian flag will be flown at half-staff along with a pink lei hulu on Hokuleʻa as the canoe sails along the Waiʻanae coast. The crew will also stop off-shore of Nanakuli to honor the community with pu and oli.

“Twinkle was the navigator who would find the smallest light in each person and help them find their way out of the darkness. She helped so many people find their way, and we are thankful that the legacy she started with Pu’uhonua O Wai’anae will continue,” said Kaina Holomalia, a Waiʻanae native and Hokuleʻa crew member.

Pokaʻi Bay, Waiʻanae was the fourth stop on the Pae ʻAina Statewide Sail. The next stop will be Kaunakakai, Molokai where the canoe is tentatively scheduled to be Sept. 29-Oct. 6, weather permitting.

From Sept. 17-21, both Hokuleʻa and Hikianalia are scheduled to be in Lahaina to be part of the Hawaii Department of Education’s Hoʻakea Maui event, a teacher professional development program based at Hanakaʻoʻo Beach Park.

The Pae ʻAina Statewide Sail is lifted by the generous support of Hawaiian Airlines and DAWSON.
