Gymkhana Games Are Under Way

Saturday, March 20, 2010 was our second Gymkhana Events for the 2010 year here on Molokai.

Being as it was the end of spring vacation for most of our school students, we only had three participants come out this month.  Gymkhana is a gathering of horsewomen and horsemen of all ages to engage in informal mounted games.

One young rider, Meleanna Pa-Kala, came dressed in green for this month’s theme, and went home with a new Molokai Green color lead rope.  And as mentioned in last month’s article, you just never know what’s going to happen at Gymkhana.  Since the other two participants were adults, the four of us took a beautiful trail ride around this writer’s homestead area and had a wonderful view of Moomomi Beach area and the East side of Oahu that afternoon.  It was a wonderful afternoon of trail ride fellowship on horseback.

The schedule for 2010 is the third Saturday of each month, weather permitting, of course.  There is a schedule of the year placed throughout Kaunakakai bulletin boards to be updated for every month’s activities. The games are held on Donna Wampler-Howard’s farm in Ho`olehua, one mile northeast past the airport on the dirt road. Fee is $15 for the day.

April’s Gymkhana Games were held on April 17, and proceeds went to the St. Jude Children’s program. April is also Hawaii’s Food Drive Month, and canned food/non-perishables was accepted. Questions, call Aunty Donna or Brittanie at 542-7355.
