The Molokai High School Girls volleyball team is preparing for a new season, and head coach Mahealani Rawlins is excited about her team this year.

“We have players who are willing to learn more and give their 110 percent each day at practice,” she said. “Each position will have to be earned which makes the competition even better.  It’s awesome being able to witness the talent and love that these girls have for the sport.”

Rawlins said she likes to help her players get to the next level of competition. As coaches, she said her staff have noted the team has a lot of potential athletes who can take the sport to the next level in their future.

The Lady Farmers will start their season with preseason games on Oahu at the McKinley invitational tournament this weekend, Aug. 19-21. The regular season will begin with two weekends on the road at Hana Aug. 26-27 and at St. Anthony Sept. 9-10, before returning home to The Barn. Home games will be against Maui Prep on Sept 16-17), Seabury Hall on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and Lanai Oct. 7-8. Senior night will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 7 vs. Lanai.

Rawlins is starting her fifth season as head coach and has a new staff this year. Bill Dudoit will serve as assistant, Hale Domingo is second assistant, and Cheryl Ramos, Cilla Maliu, Aolani Ahina and Taylor Keliihoomalu are volunteer coaches.

Rawlins was excited to have such a large turnout for tryouts this year.

“Tryouts were big this year with a total of 22 players trying out but I only kept 14 players,” she said. “It’s exciting to see The Barn full of players wanting to learn more about sport of volleyball.”

The Maui Interscholastic League girls’ volleyball tournament will be held on Lanai this year Oct. 19-22. The state tournament will be held on Oahu on Oct. 26-29.
