Girls Paddling Wins 1st Regatta of Season

The Molokai High School Girls paddling team, under head coach Stefani Hubbard, finished 3rd in last year’s state championships and has started the 2017-2018 season with a win in the 1st regatta of the Maui Interscholastic League season at Ka Lae Pohaku beach in Kihei, Maui.

Last Saturday, in rough ocean conditions the Lady Farmers took 1st in their preliminary heat, and were seeded 2nd in the final. Molokai then finished 1st with a time of 5:25:53, beating 2nd place Kamehameha Maui by just over 4 seconds. Seabury Hall was 3rd.

The Molokai varsity girl’s crew is Talia Nakayama, Hulilau Albino, Shai Rawlins, Ashawna Davis, Cahl Horner and Sherie Kaili.

Hubbard was happy with her crew’s performance.

“The first race of the season is always hard because we never know what anyone else is bringing to the table. That aside, the girls came out and put on a good show in our preliminary heat placing first,” Hubbard said. “We went into the finals seeded second after Kamehameha and I had the girls tweak a few things in the finals and with a first place finish there, I’d say it paid off.”

The next race for the Lady Farmers is Jan. 6 on Maui.
