GET Local Youth Cooking Contest

UHCES News Release

The University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service (UHCES) is launching a campaign to promote local growers in the community and encourage healthy eating by holding a GET Local Video Cooking Competition. GET local stands for Grow, Eat, Think Local. All students who are 12 to 18 years old are invited to submit a cooking video that highlights their cooking abilities, uses a local ingredient for their recipe, and includes information on the local farmer.

Prizes for winners include the chance for one recipe to be added to the menu of a top restaurant on Maui, an opportunity to film a live cooking show with a celebrity chef for a local television station, and $100 gift cards for video recording equipment. Two winners will be selected from each island!

With the support of partners Molokai Homestead Farmers Alliance, Sustainable Molokai, Lanikeha Community Center, and Hiro’s Ohana Grill, the GET Local Video Cooking Contest will launch on Molokai on Sept. 12 at Lanikeha Hall from 4:40 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This is a great opportunity for kids on Molokai who like to cook to gain experience and exposure,” said Jennifer Hawkins, Jr. Extension Agent-DHHL, University of Hawaii. “It also promotes our local agriculture and farmers on the island who are very important to our community.”

Families and farmers are invited to join the Sept. 12 kick-off event, which will provide information about the contest and will feature a short cooking demonstration with local produce.

Please contact Jennifer Hawkins to sign up for the free event at (808) 567-6935. The deadline for video submissions and recipes is November 2, 2018. To find out more, visit the GET Local website, manoa.hawaii.edu/ctahr/getlocal/index.php/video-cooking-contest-for-kids.
