Free Dental Services at Kualapu`u School
Kualapu`u School News Release
Ho`o Mino`aka means “to create smile,” and the Ho`o Mino`aka Program is coming to Kualapu`u Public Conversion Charter School. Through a partnership with the Molokai Community Health Center, Na Pu`uwai, UH John A Burns School of Medicine Department of Native Hawaiian Health, and the DentaQuest Foundation, all Kualapu`u School students will be able to have free preventive oral health care.
Treatment includes a dental exam, brushing education, protective sealant, fluoride varnish, and therapeutic fillings (no drillings). A dentist, dental hygienist, and dental assistant will be on campus during the week of April 13-17. Parental consent forms have been sent home with students, and are due to the school office by April 8. Please call Kualapu`u School if you have further questions.
The Hoo Minoaka Program is an exciting initiative that brings accessible oral healthcare directly to students in the Kualapu`u Public Conversion Charter School community. By removing common barriers such as cost and transportation, this program ensures that children receive vital preventive care early on. Preventive treatments like sealants and fluoride varnishes are especially important in protecting young teeth from decay, promoting better long-term oral health outcomes for students.
Parents can also feel reassured knowing that the program is staffed by trusted professionals for dental services—dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants who are experienced in working with children. These professionals are not only equipped to deliver quality care but also dedicated to educating students on proper brushing techniques and the importance of consistent oral hygiene. Their presence in schools fosters a positive environment where children can learn that visiting dental professionals can be a comfortable and even enjoyable experience.
By partnering with organizations such as the Molokai Community Health Center and the UH John A. Burns School of Medicine Department of Native Hawaiian Health, the program demonstrates a strong commitment to culturally sensitive care. This collaboration highlights the importance of community-driven solutions led by trusted professionals for dental services, ensuring that every student receives not only treatment but also the knowledge to take charge of their oral health. Programs like Hoo Minoaka create smiles in more ways than one—building confidence, health, and lifelong wellness habits.
