Free Bike Giveaway and Repair Event
By Catherine Cluett Pactol
Get ready to get riding! Krank Cycles Maui, a bike sales and repair business in Makawao, is coming to Molokai this Saturday to repair and give away dozens of bicycles for free. It’s part of their Maui Bike Mission, an idea Krank owner Aaron “Moose” Riechert had to use his business to help folks during the pandemic. His team has traveled to communities around Maui, as well as Lanai, to repair and donate bikes and now they’re headed to Molokai on Sept. 25.
“We’re going to be repairing and giving away as many bikes as we can,” said Riechert. He’s been asking the Maui community for bike donations for Molokai for the last couple of months. Travel to Molokai is possible through a partnership with Trilogy Excursions, Riechert said on Facebook.
The event will be held at the Molokai Youth Center from 9 a.m. until pau, the business said.
“The motive of this event is to assist those who have had a harder time paying/accessing a bike shop during these times,” said a Krank Cycles Facebook post.
Keiki will be given priority for bikes, but there will be some for adults too. If you already have a bike but it’s currently broken, bring it to the event for a free fix.
For the last year and a half, Reichert and his team has been offering the free traveling services. So far, they’ve donated nearly 300 bikes to communities around the county. On Lanai earlier this year, they repaired more than 200 bikes in one day.
“Every time we’ve done these things, the reaction is just the joy and the freedom being out on a bike, and that’s why I’m in the industry,” Riechert told Hawaii News Now.
