Farmers Downed in MIL Championship

The Molokai boys’ basketball team ended their regular season 4-2 and placing second at last week’s Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Division II tournament. The came up short of the championship, but coach Lester Delos Reyes said he is satisfied his team left everything on the court.

Last Thursday, at the tournament on Maui, the Molokai Farmers matched up against St. Anthony High School in a close match. The Farmers bested the Trojans 46-37.

That game sent the Farmers to the winner’s bracket on Friday night with a match against undefeated Seabury Hall.

They were plagued once again by the acrobatic skills of Dylan King. Down by eight points at the end of the first quarter, Molokai came back and the score was 25-22.

“We used a lot of different defenses last week. We ran 2-3 (zone), man-to-man and full-court press,” Delos Reyes said.

They couldn’t stop King, who had 26 points and three dunks, according to Maui News.

The Farmer’s outscored the Spartans in the second and third quarters, but Seabury made a comeback and the Spartans came on top in the final score of 65-51.

“The kids put everything on the court. They hustled. They played hard,” Delos Reyes said.

Molokai’s seniors, Ryan Rapanot and Kamakana Duvauchelle-Andrade were  key players in both matches, Delos Reyes said.

Delos Reyes would like to extend his aloha to the community for their support throughout the season; his wife, Roberta Delos Reyes; and Molokai Athletic Director Camie Kimball. He’d also like to thank his daughter, Sharay Delos Reyes and her boyfriend, Camillo Del Cruz from  Maui, who cooked food for the team last week and  supported the team while traveling.

Girls’ Basketball

The number two seeded Molokai Lady Farmer’s weren’t  able to pull off a win at the state tournament last week.

They lost a close game to Maryknoll last Wednesday evening at Kaimuki High School, 43-41. They then went into the fifth-place berth against University High, where they lost again, 45-29.

Coaches did not return calls for comment.
