Farmer Swimmers Start Season on Maui

The Molokai High School Boys and Girls swim teams started their Maui Interscholastic League season at the Kihei Aquatic Center last weekend. Top finishers for the Farmers were:

Boys: Jalen Kalama, 5th in 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:16.16

Girls: Kapili Naehu-Ramos, 5th in 200 Individual medley with a time of 2:50.84

“We had a lot of awesome swims this weekend and I had 5 kids that this was their first ever swim meet and they did super great,” said Head Coach Amanda Labriola. “Michelle McGuire carried her 200 free relay team with amazing split times and Royden Abafo broke a minute in the 100 free swimming a 59.34 and also broke 30 (seconds) in the 50 fly swimming a 29.”

Molokai will swim next at the MIL Invitational #1 at the Kihei Aquatic Center Jan. 12 at 5 p.m. Molokai will also host a swim meet at the Cooke memorial Pool in Kaunakakai Jan. 16 at 2 p.m.

“Jalen is starting his season off in the 100 breaststroke right where he left off last season so he can only get better from here. I am so proud of this team and there sportsmanship with each other. I have such an awesome group of swimmers this year,” Labriola said.

Labriola said it’s looking like this season will  be very successful for Molokai swimmers.

“Practices have been going amazing this season, the kids are really pushing their limits and doing a lot more yardage then they were able to accomplish last year,” she said.
