Discuss Proposed Animal Shelter on Monday

Shields’ Animal Shelter Foundation News Release

The Shields’ Animal Shelter Foundation would like to welcome you to a community forum at The Mitchell Pauole Center on Monday, May 6 at 6 p.m. Please join us in an open discussion regarding our proposal to bring The Shields’ Animal Shelter to Molokai.

The Foundation was established in 2009 upon the passing of longtime friend of Molokai, Mrs. Kathleen Shields. A great animal lover, Mrs. Shields supported the mission of the Molokai Humane Society, and it was her dream to one day see a fully functioning animal shelter on Molokai. Mrs. Shields’ was so inclined to improve the lives of the animals on Molokai that in her will she left a small endowment for the expressed purpose of building a shelter on this island she loved so very much.

We look forward to meeting you as we continue to move Mrs. Shields’ intention forward. We feel a sacred responsibility in advancing Mrs. Shields’ wishes and we hope you can join us as we look to you for guidance in establishing an animal shelter in a way that best serves the dogs, cats and people of Molokai.

Topics will include shelter design, possible location, housing capacity and intended services. We will also discuss how we plan to face the feral dog and cat populations that threaten the delicate and precious ecosystem of Molokai. Throughout the evening we will seek community input in the form of questions, comments and suggestions. We hope to perform our duty to the memory of Mrs. Shields’ with respect and humility to the Molokai `aina.

Dinner will be served. Ho`olu komo la kaua.

Special thanks to our community sponsors, the Molokai Humane Society, for their continued support and enthusiasm throughout these planning phases, and for making this event possible.
