Cross Country Teams Prep for Season

The Molokai High School Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are practicing for the upcoming season. The boys are coached by longtime Head Coach Mahina Hou Ross and the girls have a new first year Head Coach Kabbie Bicoy-Juario, who is taking over from long time Head Coach Eugene Santiago.

Bicoy-Juario, who has been involved with the cross country teams for many years, is excited for the new season.

“We started pre-season training during the summer and I already have 12 girls who came out,” she said. “Five are returnees and four returnees from my middle school cross country girls’ team.  They already are looking awesome and they can’t wait for our first race. I would like to thank Athletic Director Lee DeRouin for allowing me to give back to my alma mater and Uncle Eugene Santiago for showing me the ropes and handing me the torch.”

The Girls Cross Country team is holding a fundraising “Molokai Fun Run” on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Ironwood Hills Golf Course. Registration and check in is from 2 to 2:40 p.m. and the three-mile run begins at 3 p.m. The price is $25 and includes a T-shirt and snack bag. For more information about this event or how to make a monetary donation please contact Bicoy at (808) 336-0731.

The Boys and Girls teams’ first race is on Sept. 2 for the West Maui Invitational, followed by a meet at Kamehameha Schools Maui on Sept. 30. The MIL Championship will be held on Oct. 21, with the state race Oct. 27-18 on Kauai.
