Community Calendar Returning

The Molokai Dispatch News Release

The community calendar, a weekly section of The Molokai Dispatch that lists upcoming community events and meetings, is making a comeback after a hiatus during the pandemic. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Sust’ainable Molokai, the calendar will be printed again beginning in April. Get ready to submit your events and plan your community schedule!

Prior to COVID-19, the community calendar section was a prominent weekly feature in the pages of the Dispatch, offering extensive listings of recurring weekly classes and meetings, as well as upcoming one-time events. In an effort to cut costs during the pandemic, combined with the fact that community events weren’t taking place, we temporarily removed the calendar. It had been a large-scale feature that printed free of charge for years, with the Dispatch taking on the added printing cost of this page as a service to the community. However, we recognized that we needed to find a more financially sustainable way to continue printing the calendar to cover our rising production costs.

That’s when Sust’ainable Molokai, a local nonprofit focused on community-building from food sustainability to renewable energy, stepped up to sponsor the calendar feature. They recognized its value to our community for residents to keep track of upcoming events as well as a planning tool for local organizations when scheduling their own events. We are grateful for their support in bringing back the community calendar!

With COVID mandates winding down and island events returning, along with a plethora of virtual meetings, April is the perfect time to relaunch the calendar. As before, the community calendar will be open to the public – all residents as well as local businesses, agencies and organizations are welcomed to include upcoming events. We invite you to submit your calendar listings by emailing editor@themolokaidispatch.com, and include the name, date, location and time of the event, along with a brief description and contact info. Yard sales are not included in the calendar. Moving forward, we also plan to focus on one-time or series-based events rather than listing recurring weekly meetings and classes. Please email us or call 808-552-2781 with any questions.

If you or your organization would like to sponsor any weekly feature in The Molokai Dispatch, such as  weekly crossword puzzle, sudoku, astrology or other section you enjoyed from the past, please contact us.
