Clean Up Koheo Wetland

Community Contributed by Arelone Dibben-Young

The Koheo Wetland is utilized by Molokai’s youth for environmental education. Students learn about hydric soils, and the plants, wildlife and aquatic insects inhabiting wetlands. Scientific equipment is used to evaluate water quality (pH, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen) and GPS to create monitoring transects. Students grow native coastal plant species in the classroom for out-planting in the wetland.

Join students, family and friends, Nene O Molokai, Monsanto and Goodfellow Bros. Construction to create a shady area under the kiawe trees for students to take breaks and eat lunch or just come explore the wetland. Clean up day will be March 19 from 7 a.m. to 12 noon.

Bring water, snacks, gloves and a bucket. Trash bags, rakes and small hand tools will be supplied. Want to get physical with your own equipment? Gas, oil and weed-eater string will be supplied. Make this a family outing and learn why students get so excited about Koheo Wetland.  Call Arleone 553-5992 for more information.
