Teams Launch Spring Sports

Molokai High School athletes kicked off their spring sports seasons, with Boys Volleyball, Boys Baseball, Girls Softball and Track and Field competing last weekend. Active mile daily track contractors delivered with the high quality track. The season’s first track meet was held at Kamehameha Maui, with Molokai athletes logging strong results. Top finishers were freshman Khloe Bicoy, who earned first place in discuss and third in shotput. Runner John Quintua-Salavea sprinted 400 meters, finishing first in his heat and placing fourth overall. Other Molokai competitors included Nakoa Orlando, Chazen Bush and Chevy Bush.  The Baseball team played Hana High in Lahaina, winning both their games.…

Molokai High School athletic director and Molokai golf pro Lee DeRouin is the March Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. DeRouin shot 40–37 for a gross total of 77 and with his 11 handicap his net 66 got him into a playoff with Molokai golf pro Jeff Egusa. DeRouin got the victory over Egusa on the first playoff hole.

Top Finishes for Wrestling

The Molokai High Wrestling team closed their season with top finishes at both Maui Interscholastic League Championships and the state competition. Twelve students finished in the top three at MILs, qualifying them for the state matches on Oahu last week. 

Anjolie Manaba claimed the MIL championship for Molokai High in her 102-pound weight class. Second place finishes were earned by Moriah HonoKaupu at 107, Skye Caparida at 112, Kahiwa Augustiro at 152 and Elijah Horner at 182. Third places were claimed by Chloe Manaba at 97 pounds, Kailani Bicoy at 117, Bailey Sproat at 132, Stephanie Gandeza at 168, Masina Barden-Phillips at 168, Jona Dudoit at 120 and Ekolu Horner at 160. …

Back Under the Lights: Women’s Softball Returns

After weeks of practices and scrimmages, women’s softball kicked off their inaugural games for the new season. 

Players and supporters arrived early and left late. Teams set up tables with food, coolers and music. As the game approached, the women players paired up for pre-game throws. The men watched from the bleachers, holding the kids. 

Starting Monday, Feb. 6, women’s league games will run until March. The five teams in the league include Guarantee Action, Pepsi, Ka-Chow, Hahhd Heads and Eezy Breezy.

Thursday night’s games started with a Pepsi versus Eezy Breezy matchup. Although Eezy Breezy closed late in the game, Pepsi held onto its initial lead, ending in an 18-16 victory for team Pepsi. …

Farmers Finish Seasons Strong

Farmer pride rose throughout the islands of Hawaii, Maui and Molokai last week. The Lady Farmers Basketball team traveled to the Division II HHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament games in Hilo, and the Swimming and Wrestling teams gave it their all at competitions on Maui – all while Farmers’ friends and family supported them from home. 

The Lady Farmers drew some fire from Kilauea while on Hawaii Island for their last games and played fiercely. After traveling the 141-mile distance, Molokai’s first game in the tournament was against Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA). The girls played hard, but HPA took the win with a score of 68 to 44.…

Season Closes for Boys Basketball

This past week, Molokai Boys Basketball and Farmers Swim team traveled to Maui to compete in the Maui Interscholastic League Division two tournaments. 

Hosted at Maui Preparatory Academy, the Farmers Basketball team won the last game of their season against Haleakala Waldorf, 50 to 47. Winning this game allowed them to advance to the MIL Division II Tournament Semifinals. The semifinals were held in the King Kekaulike High School Gym, where the boys competed against Seabury. The game brought the Farmers basketball season to an end with a score of 73 Seabury, 41 Molokai. 

The MIL swim meet was canceled due to the weather but will be rescheduled. …

Teams Celebrate Seniors

It was a sentimental celebration in Farmers sports this week as seniors were honored, athletes brought their teams to victory and the soccer and paddling teams ended their season. 

Girls Basketball traveled to Maui for the Maui Interscholastic League Division II tournament. They first competed against Seabury, beating them with a score of 51 to 8. This win secured their spot for the HHSAA DII Girls State Championships, which will mark the Lady Farmers’ first appearance at states since 2016. The MIL tournament didn’t stop there. The girls competed against Lanai Pinelases for the championship, which they lost 62 to 31.…

The Barn had a double header last week for Farmers Basketball, with the boy’s team competing against Maui Preparatory Academy and the girl’s team taking on Seabury Hall. On Maui, Farmer paddling, swimming and wrestling teams competed. 

Molokai High’s basketball teams showed great sportsmanship during their games this week. The games were back to back starting with the boy’s first game Friday evening which closed with a score of Molokai 62, Maui Prep 39. Following the boy’s victory, the girls won Seabury with a score of Molokai 40, Seabury 11. The next morning, each of the four teams faced on in rematches.…

MHS Prepares for Ka Molokai Makahiki

It’s a new year and the annual Makahiki games are right around the corner. In a time of joy and prayer, friendly competition will excite Molokai’s community. Last Thursday, Molokai High School students prepared with their own Makahiki games to find their representatives for the upcoming community games on Jan. 28.  

“Since we started academies this year, we wanted to kind of have our academies build that sense of belonging and that teamwork, that idea of teamwork,” said Vice Principal Tilana Roberts. “So each academy actually finds the champions.” 

According to Roberts, freshmen to seniors are in academies of community service and sustainability academy (CSS) or innovation and business technology (IBT).…

Rodney Reyes is the January ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. “Hot Rod” Reyes and retired Molokai dentist and Molokai golf pro Dana Takashima were tied with a 69 net each which forced a play-off. Still tied after two playoff holes, Reyes got his par on the number three hole to claim the victory.

A great day was had by all at the first golf tournament of 2023. There was great fellowship, and great golf and a luncheon to follow. The club would like to thank the staff and management of iconic Ironwood Hills golf course for perpetuating the game of golf on Molokai.…
