Wrestling Club is Ready to Rumble

A determined group of young Molokai athletes have been invited to take their wrestling skills to a bigger mat. After proving themselves during this summer’s wrestling tournaments on Oahu and Maui, the Molokai Wrestling club has set its sights on upcoming tournaments in Utah and Las Vegas.  

Founded just this past May, the team has grown impressively in size and stature. From its original group of five girls, it has expanded to encompass more than 30 girls and boys ages 5 and up. Led by Coach Justin Luafalemana, the team prides itself on the hard work of its members and supporters. …

Retired dentist and Molokai pro golfer Dana Takashima is the October Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Takashima had a gross score of 84 and with his 14 handicap his 70 net score got him the victory. The Hui O Kukui Golf Club would like to thank the staff and management of iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course for perpetuating the game of golf on Molokai.…

Molokai High School’s Farmers took strides with athletic wins throughout the weekend. The Lady Farmers Volleyball team traveled to Maui to play against Haleakala Waldorf while boys and girls Cross Country ran at Baldwin. On the neighboring island of Lanai, Farmers Football took on the Pinelads in an 8-man game. 

On Friday night, Sep. 23, Molokai High’s Volleyball team dominated the game. They took the win in four sets, 3-1 over Haleakala Waldorf. The first set landed with the Lady Farmers winning 25-14. Waldorf took on the second set with a score of 20-25. Then pulling through, the Farmers stole the game in the last two sets, 25-13 and 25-19.…

Football Expands Horizons

The Farmers expanded their 11-man football experience two weeks ago at an exhibition game against Waialua in Oahu. 

 The team played with power through the game with a final score of 22-14 Waialua. Even with the loss, the boys represented Molokai well. According to Nichol Kahale, the last time Molokai played Waialua at Waialua High School was in the 1950s.

“Happy that this is finally happening,” Kahale shared on social media. “…In the 1950s my dad, Larry Helm, Uncle Greg Helm, Kimberly Ku’uipo, and Tomie Helm played football against my father-in-law Larry Kahale. My dad shared with me that their shoulder pads were made of cardboard.”…

Last Friday night, Sept. 16, the Barn was decked out in Senior Night decorations and Farmer’s spirit. It was a close game between the Lady Farmers and Maui Preparatory Pueos. Molokai High brought effort and support that pushed the game to five sets. 

It started rough for the Lady Farmers as Maui Preparatory took the first set, 25-13. Bouncing back, Molokai’s girls took the second set, 25-20. Taking it away, Pueos accomplished the next set, 25-19, and the Farmers tied it up, winning the fourth set, 25-21. The fifth set ended with a 15-12, giving Maui Preparatory the win.…

New Coach Helps Gym-Goers Get Healthy

Lance Purdy, a fitness trainer who began working at Na Pu’uwai’s Integrated Fitness Center gym in February, is here to help.  “During the pandemic, a lot of people lost their habits so the whole idea is trying to get back those habits,” said Purdy, IFC supervisor and coach who recommends the new supplements such as those for sale on this UK CBD Shop. Though the gym was closed or open with restrictions and limited hours during much of the past several years, everyone is getting back on track and he’s happy to see the gym busier these days. …

Mixed Results for Girls Volleyball

The Lady Farmers Volleyball team showed strength in their first games of the season the past three weekends. 

The girls launched their season with away games against Lanai Aug. 26-27. They lost both games to the Pine Lasses. Back home two weeks ago, the Lady Farmers hosted St. Anthony and brought themselves back from the loss. 

Friday night, Sept. 2, the Barn was filled with the family and community of the Lady Farmers. St. Anthony took set one, 25-20. The second set came up with a supportive crowd and loud cheers to bring the Farmer spirit.…

Molokai Paddlers Get Golds at World Sprints

Molokai’s Penny Martin and Camie Kimball won three gold medals with their team last month at the International Va’a Federation’s Va’a World Sprints held in the United Kingdom near London. The two paddled with the Island Masters crew, a group of women from around Hawaii, in the Womens 70 division. They earned first place in the 500 meter straight race, the 500 meter with one turn and the double hull events. 

In the 500 straight race, they won by just a fraction of a second. 

“It was a butt clencher,” Martin laughed. “We thought we lost but we got in and found out we won.…

Farmers Take First Season Win

The Molokai Farmers Football team put on an excellent game this weekend against Lanai Pinelads. Taking the win at 41-6, the Farmers took the start to the season with the supporting community and spirit of the cheerleaders right beside them. Head Coach Mike Kahale with his staff and players worked hard to start the season strong. 

Reflecting on the game, Kahale was pleased with the effort. He said it feels like years ago since the last real season of football, with only the one 11-man controlled scrimmage with the Na Ali’i of King Kekaulike High School in between.…
