Rick Schonely, retired Maui County firefighter, substitute teacher of the year and island musician, is the July Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Schonely shot 41–39 for a gross score of 80 and with his 14 handicap his net 66 secured his victory. Congratulations Schonz!

Study Proves Benefits of Paddling

A three-year study conducted by the University of Hawaii has determined what many in Hawaii already know — outrigger canoe paddling is both popular and beneficial to the health of the Native Hawaiian community. 

The study was conducted by the UH Office of Public Health Studies and surveyed over 13,500 Hawaiian residents. The results revealed that while 20 percent of Hawaii residents have paddled, over 40 percent of Native Hawaiians have participated in outrigger canoe paddling. 

Paddling, and other culturally relevant physical activities like hula, can offer insight into “chronic disease prevention and management” in the Native Hawaiian population, according to the study.  …

The Molokai teachers held their annual Summer Golf Classic at iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course on Wednesday, June 21. The summer classic is always played in June and 14 golfers teed off from the red, white and blue tees to have an outstanding day of golf and camaraderie. 

Longtime Molokai PE teacher Ponciano Raguindin took both trophies this year with a net score of 75 and a gross score of 67 to win the horns trophy, the jacket for the low gross, and the bowl trophy for the low net. Bob Danner was runner up for the low gross and Rick Schonely was the runner up for the low net. …

Canoe Races Return

After a four-year break during the pandemic, the famed Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai paddling races are back on. There’s both excitement among paddlers for their return, as well as challenges to overcome. The women’s crossing will be on Sept. 24 and the men’s race is set for Oct. 8. 

Hundreds of paddlers from around the globe flock to Molokai each year for the iconic Ka’iwi Channel crossings – and that can put a strain on the island’s resources, particularly after COVID. 

One of the biggest obstacles race organizers and community members considered in discussions of whether or not to bring the races back was how to get paddlers to Molokai. …

Molokai Cousins Victorious at State Rodeo

Two Molokai youth were named state champions at the Hawaii High School State Rodeo. Cousins Kahiwa Augustiro, age 18, and Bailey Sproat, age 16, put on impressive displays of horsemanship and athleticism at the June 9 and 10 rodeo at the New Town and Country stables in Waimanalo, Oahu. 

Along with individual victories, the Molokai duo took home first place together in the team roping event. 

“It was like nothing else,” said Augustiro reflecting on the weekend’s accomplishments. In addition to the team roping title, Augustiro came away with victories in bareback bronco riding, steer wrestling, and bull riding.…

The Molokai Holokai Ho’olaule’a is to be held on Molokai, July 14-15 and is a combination of some fun ocean paddling and land events.  

The event kicks off on July 14 with the Maui to Molokai Challenge, 27 miles from DT Fleming Beach Park, Maui, at 9 a.m. and the Gorilla Ogo and Mangrove Seed contest kicks off on the Molokai side at Kaunakakai Harbor, Molokai, with Sustainable Molokai. Finally, a late afternoon evening Skate Jam session will be held at the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) with local boy Alex Mawae.

Day two is full of action on Molokai, with the Ho’olaule’a bringing out the community and visiting paddlers to enjoy a day of festivities as we celebrate our youth.…

Kawai Spencer, fire fighter and bus driver and all around nice guy, is the June Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Spencer shot a gross 88 and with his 27 handicap his net 61 got him the victory. Molokai raised and alumni of Molokai High School, Annette Luafalemana travels home to host a free volleyball clinic on June 3-4 at the Molokai High School Gym. Ike Loa Volleyball Camp is open to ages 8 to 17 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for under 12, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ages 13 and older. 

Passionate about volleyball, she currently manages the Fieldhouse Volleyball Club in Texas that helps all ages to follow their dreams and become proud athletes.  This is her way of giving back to her community that helped raise her to be who she is now.  …

Spring Sports Close Out the Season

The Maui Interscholastic League Division II champion Farmers Baseball team took on the state tournament last week. The Farmers were ultimately defeated by Damien, 7-2, and Konawaena, 9-2. The Farmers finished the year with a 13-4 record and their ninth consecutive MIL DII title. 

“Mahalo Molokai for all the love and support! Mahalo Mr. Schonely, Lee and faculty, parents for all the help this season, my ohana for getting my back and most importantly the boys that had to deal with me throughout the season, until next season,” said MHS Baseball Coach Keahi Rawlins in a Facebook post. …
