Victories for MHS Sports

This past Saturday, the Molokai High School (MHS) Cross Country Team competed at King Kekaulike, featuring both the Boys and Girls divisions.

As a team, the Molokai boys placed fifth with a score of 143. Top finishers for Molokai included Jericho Adolpho placing 18th with a time of 20:02.8 and Sonny Dunham placing 22nd with a time of 20:55.5.

For the Girls Cross Country Team, top finishers included Kaia Yamashita placing 19th with a time of 26:15.2, Sonni Han with a time of 32:43.1 at 39th, and Ara Puaa with a time of 33:05.1 at 40th. …

“Neva Give Up” Wrestling Tournament

The ‘Ainapa’a Wrestling Team proudly organized and hosted the “Neva Give Up” Scramble Tournament, which took place at Molokai High School’s gymnasium on Sept. 9. 

This event showcased the prowess and determination of a diverse array of wrestlers, from the earliest stages of kindergarten up to 12th grade, and drew participants from the various islands of Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and Molokai. 

These dedicated athletes engaged in Folkstyle wrestling, exemplifying the highest standards of sportsmanship and competitive fervor. Matches were executed in a scramble format with no weight cutting with each wrestler receiving approximately three matches with opponents of close age, weight, and experience.…

Molokai Farmers Football vs Lanai Pine Lads

On Sept. 9, the Molokai Farmers Football Team, with Head Coach Mike Kahale, traveled to Lanai City for a matchup against the Pine Lads. 

The Molokai Farmers improved their record to 2-0 with a 35-6 win over the Pine Lads. Tonka Kalilikane and Keith Gloor-Suafoa each scored two touchdowns with the addition of Kestan Tamanaha also scoring a touchdown reception for the Farmers.  

Kalilikane had scoring runs of 77 and 72 yards while Gloor-Suafoa threw TD passes of 27 and 18 yards. Kobra Cariaga-Abafo, the starting quarterback for the Farmers, delivered the initial touchdown pass before unfortunately succumbing to an ankle injury.…

On Sept. 2, Molokai High School (MHS) Football opened the season with a home game vs. Seabury.

In the first quarter of the game, Seabury took an early lead with a score of 8-0, thanks to Elima Dagan’s impressive 50-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful 2-point conversion. Molokai quickly responded, tying the game at 8-8 with Christian Nip’s 11-yard touchdown run, also followed by a successful 2-point conversion. 

Molokai then took the lead with David Kalilikane’s 10-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 16-8. Another Molokai touchdown increased the lead to 22-8. 

In the second quarter, Molokai continued their strong performance with Kalilikane scoring two more touchdowns, first with an 8-yard run and then with a 42-yard run, bringing the score to 37-8 in favor of Molokai. …

Greig Len Wai, the pride of Friendly Market Center and one of Molokai’s professional golfers, is the September Ace for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Len Wai shot 36-43 for a gross score of 79 and with his seven handicap his net 72 got him to victory.  Len Wai now qualifies for the Ace of Aces Club Championship in December. Congratulations Greigo!

Fall Outrigger Races Canceled

The Molokai Hoe, Na Wahine o Ke Kai and Pailolo Challenge outrigger channel races will not run this year. 

“This decision has been made in response to the unfolding federal crisis on Maui, where fires have ravaged the island and left communities grappling with the aftermath,” explained a news release regarding the Molokai Hoe cancelation from the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA). 

With residents of West Maui still reeling from deadly and devastating fires, Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai organizers each hoped to redirect resources and energy towards recuperation efforts on Maui. 

“Given the gravity of the situation and the urgent need to allocate all available Maui County resources to support the Maui community impacted by the fires, OHCRA believes that postponing this year’s Molokai Hoe is not only a responsible course of action, but also a demonstration of unity and solidarity during times of crisis,” explained the OHCRA press release. …

MHS Fall Sports Outlook

The school year has begun and sports are back at Molokai High School, with football and volleyball already practicing at full speed this summer. This year will be filled with excitement, as fall sports will be offering sideline cheer, eight-man football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, and boys and girls air riflery this season. 

Kaimana Kahale, a coach from the football team, said he is looking forward to an exciting season even though they have graduated many seniors.

“Though we have lost 18 senior players, we are still thrilled about this team which has brought out new additional athletes,” he said. …

Dr. Dana Takashima, retired dentist and Molokai professional golfer, is the August Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Takashima, the better half of the Susumo Brothers, with Jeff Egusa, shot 42-38 for a gross score of 80. With his 13 handicap, his net 67 secured his victory. Takashima now qualifies for the Ace of Aces Club Championship in December.

Season’s Last Regatta

Molokai’s three canoe clubs gathered for the island’s last regatta of the summer paddling season at Kaunakakai Wharf last Saturday. Crews of all ages from Molokai Canoe Club, Wa’akapaemua and Kukui clubs battled it out in friendly competition in ¼ and ½ mile races. Some crews will go on to paddle at the state race held this year in Hilo Bay on Aug. 5. …

Last weekend’s two-day Molokai Holokai featured homegrown and visiting paddlers in a variety of race events and fun activities on land and sea. Hosted by local nonprofit Youth in Motion, the annual event brings out all ages and abilities to enjoy the sport of paddling in many forms, from outrigger to stand-up, foil and windsurf. 

Friday featured a Maui to Molokai race, a mangrove seed contest, harbor cleanup and a skate jam session. Saturday was packed with a Holo Fun Run, Kamalo downwinder paddle race, keiki and makua races, trash art contest and a ho’olaulea at Molokai Community Health Center with live entertainment, food and craft vendors and cultural workshops.…
