Lady Farmers Volleyball Starts Strong

The Lady Farmers dominated their home court at the Barn last week against Lanai High, sweeping all three games on both days. On Friday, they scored 25-16, 25-18, 25-19; on Saturday, they scored 25-15, 25-12, 25-20.

“I think we did really good,” said new head coach Mahea Rawlins, who took over after former coach Matt Helm accepted a coaching position at Whitman College in Seattle. “[The girls] worked together and talked it out on the field.”

On Friday, junior Taylor Keliihoomalu led scoring for the Lady Farmers with nine kills, three digs and one solo block. Fellow junior Rizpah Torres-Umi topped the team with seven digs.…

Farmers Football gears up for the season

Wiwo`ole. Kupono. Lokahi. These three words are chanted at the beginning of each game and are values expected from each of Molokai High School’s (MHS) football student athlete. It reminds players to be fearless, to be disciplined and to be unified — three principles as crucial to football as they are to life, according to Hanohano Naehu, assistant coach and defensive coordinator.

“If they can be those three things, then they can play for [us] and we are going crush whoever we go against,” said Naehu. “These are the na koa, our modern-day warriors that we send to represent us.”…

Battle for the Belt

Molokai cowboy and professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Sale Sproat came home from MMA event, Destiny: Na Koa, with the championship belt for the Pro Middleweight title around his waist. Sproat defeated Douglas Silva Moura, a student of famous Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter Anderson Silva, who sat ringside for the fight on Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena on Oahu. Sproat, 185 pounds, won by technical knockout (TKO) within a minute and a half of the first round.

“This is the hardest I’ve ever trained in my life — I was well-prepared mentally and physically,” said Sproat. “I’m definitely happy with the way [the fight] went.”…

8th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser

MHS Girls Volleyball News Release

The quiet morning at Ironwood Hills Golf Course was interrupted by the familiar “ping” of metal on rubber as 42 eager golfers set out to win the 8th annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser, hosted by Molokai High School (MHS) Girls Volleyball Booster Club on Aug. 25. Great camaraderie was shared by all and participants and guests enjoyed awards, special prizes, lucky number and lunch served by MHS’ Lady Farmers. All proceeds go towards expenses for the upcoming season.

Blossom Poepoe, Keif Apo and Keith Hirashima net a score of 59.2, winning this year’s tournament. Friendly Market’s team –Jeff Egusa, Sty Falealii and Frances Magdarilla –came in a close second with a score of 59.3.…

Swimming the Seven Seas

Swimmer from India aims to complete the Molokai-Lanai Channel

As inclined towards the water as islanders are, few Hawaiians can boast the ability to swim 10 hours non-stop. However, open water swimmer from East India, Amol Adhav, has swam the English Channel, the Bhagirathi River in India and the South African Channel to Robben Island. This week, he hopes to become the first man from India to swim the 9.3-mile-long Kalohi Channel between Molokai and Lanai.

The 32-year-old said it is his dream to swim in oceans all around the world. Originally from Bombay, India, Adhav has won endurance competitions in long-distance and marathon running as well as local swimming tournaments.…

A Chance at the NFL

NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition

Footballs flew up and down Kaunakakai Ball Field Saturday morning as keiki ages 6 to 15 practiced their punts, passes and kicks. This is the second year Molokai has hosted the nationwide Punt, Pass and Kick (PPK) Competition, sponsored by the National Football League (NFL).

“It’s a good opportunity for the kids to participate in a physical event, especially with football season coming up,” said Mike Mangca, Maui County’s Recreation Leader for Molokai.

Each child gets the opportunity for one punt, one pass and one kick, and a score is calculated based on distance and accuracy, according to NFL PPK’s website.…

Ever wanted to become a better athlete, coach or parent, but wasn’t sure how to take the next step? Workshops this weekend — the first of their kind on the island — hosted by the Molokai High School (MHS) Athletic Department and held by the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), can help you learn how.

PCA is a national non-profit with the mission to provide all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience. Since its 1998 launch at Stanford University by Founder and Chief Executive Officer Jim Thompson, PCA has impacted more than 4 million youth athletes.…

Going for Gold

Molokai paddlers place first at this year’s Great Kahakuloa Race

The men’s team from Molokai’s Wa`akapaemua Canoe Club returned as champions of this year’s Great Kahakuloa Race, held on Maui Sunday morning. The race, sponsored by Na Kai Ewalu, spanned 26 miles from Maliko Gulch to Canoe Beach in Lahaina. The team finished in 3 hours and 25 minutes, followed closely by Wailea Canoe Club and then Hawaiian Canoe Club, both from Maui.

Last year, the crew placed third in this race. This is the first time since the 1980s they have beaten Hawaiian Canoe Club, one of the top crews in Maui, according to paddler Clint Labrador.…

Take off your shoes, put on your gloves, step into the ring and check your pride at the door. For the boys who train regularly with Relentless MMA, Molokai’s only amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) club, this is standard everyday procedure.

“The sport of MMA teaches you to get rid of your pride,” said Nate Harris, who has been with Relentless MMA for the past four years. “Lots of people think pride is good, but the more humble you are the more respect you have for others, and all these boys [at Relentless MMA] have respect for each other.”…

Three Molokai boys win MMA fights on Maui

On weekday afternoons, 23-year-old Randen Abafo spends his free time fighting. Not on the streets, but for sport. In the warehouse next to Na Pu`uwai Fitness Center, he dons his gear –a simple pair of training gloves –and spends the next four hours jabbing, kicking, grappling and training with other members of Relentless MMA, Molokai’s only amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) club.

His hard work paid off on July 28 as Abafo won his third amateur fight at the Unorthodox Industries Championships VIII (UIC) Fight at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui. The Molokai native faced Maui’s Adrian Pelayo for two rounds in the ring, winning the second with a technical knock out (TKO) after one minute and 20 seconds.…
