MHS Air Riflery hosts first home meet in 22-year history

Crouched on one knee, rifle pressed firmly into her right shoulder, Molokai High School (MHS) senior Mariah Kalipi remembers to breathe as she focuses in on a paper target 33 feet in front of her. Her left arm rests on her left knee, the fingers of her right hand pressed gently on the trigger, ready. Her eyes never stray from the target as she takes a deep but steady breath and fires. Molokai Swim Club a Reality

Rumors of a year-round swim club forming on Molokai have been circulating around the island for many months. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Malcolm Cooper, head coach of the Maui Dolphins Swim Club (MDSC), who obtained a permit from the county and the support of Zachary Helm and Michael Manga, from the local Parks and Recreation, the swim club is now reality.

Beginning 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 1, the Molokai Chapter of the Maui Dolphins will hold its first practice at Cooke Memorial Pool. Regular practices will be held Monday through Thursday (except holidays) every week of the year after regular pool hours.…

Home Field Advantage

Farmers Football beats Hana 42-0

The Farmers football team dominated their home field against Hana High Dragons on Saturday, winning 42-0. This was the first home game of the season, and the win brings their record to 1-1, having been defeated by Seabury Hall last week on Maui.
The Farmers’ offensive line scored five touchdowns in the first half and one in the second. Their solid defense kept Hana from scoring any points the entire game.

“The best thing [about this game] was that everybody had an opportunity to play,” said Molokai High School’s (MHS) head coach Mike Kahale after the game.…

Prize Fighters

The crowd at Molokai High School’s Barn cheered wildly as the official raised 15-year-old Michaiah Soares’ hand as the winner of his match. Soares, who has been training with Molokai Southside Boxing Club for the past two years, defeated his opponent Tre Acang after three two-minute bouts. The win brings his amateur fighting record to 3-1.

Fighters from across the state traveled to compete in the Molokai Southside Boxing Invitational, the first sanctioned amateur boxing event on Molokai. Other victors from Molokai included Jordan Manangan, age 10, Kazmero Zeithammel, 13, Simon Blair, 19 and Hunter Manaba, 15. The event on Saturday featured 21 matches.…

Na Wahine O Ke Kai 2012

With large overhead swells crashing right into Hale O Lono Harbor Sunday morning, just getting out to the starting line became a treacherous feat for paddlers competing in the 34th annual Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe race. The surf was so big that 10 canoes were swamped, with a few vessels flipping completely, just exiting the harbor before the race started. Fortunately for Molokai’s only competing team, the wahine of Team Boomski of Wa`akapaemua Canoe Club navigated out past the breakers and made it swiftly to the starting line. They went on to finish the race, which spans about 40 miles, with a time of 7:02:46.…

MHS’s cross country runners gain experience at MIL meet

Seven of the 14 girls from Molokai High School’s (MHS) cross country team traveled to Hana for the season’s third Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Meet on Saturday. Though none of the girls placed, the runners, who were all freshmen, got their first taste at competing in a cross country meet.

“I was proud of them because they gave it their best effort and that’s all I could ask for,” said Coach Eugene Santiago.

They started training five weeks ago, running for about three miles every practice at various locations like Ironwood Golf Course, the track at MHS, the fields at Coffees of Hawaii and along the highway.…

Strokes Ahead

Wa`akapaemua Canoe Club continues a strong season

While Molokai is an island rich with skilled paddlers, members from one canoe club in particular –Wa`akapaemua –has been making quite the splash this season. Last weekend, both the men’s and women’s teams competed in the annual Pailolo Challenge, which spans the 26-mile channel between West Maui and South Molokai. The men took first in the Men’s open division and a close second in the overall race with a time of 2:55:33, while the women came in seventh in the Women’s open division with a time of 3:46:33.

Molokai Canoe Club also competed in the Men’s open division, finishing with a time of 3:40:42.…

Boxing in the Home Ring

First sanctioned amateur event on Molokai this weekend

For the first time in over 30 years, young Molokai boxers will be able to slip on their gloves and hear their name chanted as they face off in front of friends and family on their home island. Old timers remember the last boxing matches held on Molokai in the early 1980s, but this weekend, the Molokai Southside Boxing Club will host the first USA Boxing-sanctioned amateur event on the island that anyone can recall. The event is drawing fighters ages 8 to 24 from around the state for 21 confirmed bouts.

For Molokai youth, the Molokai Southside Boxing Invitational is a chance to compete on their home turf and gain valuable experience in the ring, which is limited because traveling to off-island sanctioned events is so expensive.…

The Hike of a Lifetime

Molokai resident hikes 2,184 mile-long Appalachian Trail

Every year, about 2,500 people venture to hike the Appalachian Trail, a 2,184-mile long path along America’s east coast that begins at Springer Mountain in Georgia and ends at Mount Katahdin in Maine. Only 20 percent of these hikers actually finish the trail from end-to-end, becoming thru-hikers, or long distance hikers. Among these, Molokai resident Fred Clews, 66, who completed the trail earlier this year.

Clews, whose nickname amongst fellow hikers was “Granddad,” started the hike on March 3 at Springer Mountain in Georgia and reached the finish at Mt. Katahdin on July 10.…

Hoopstahz at the Barn

University of Hawaii Basketball coming to Molokai

For the first time ever, the men’s basketball team from University of Hawaii (UH) will come to Molokai to play a regular season game against Chaminade University. The event, which Molokai High School (MHS) students are calling “Hoopstahz at the Barn,” will be hosted at MHS’s gym on Dec. 15.

Not only is this a historic game for Molokai, it also marks an important landmark for UH’s assistant coach Brandyn Akana, who was born and raised on the Friendly Isle.

“It’s a dream come true for me to see all this happening because Molokai is a special place,” he said.…
