Channel Riders

Wa`akapaemua Canoe Club’s Team Boomski wahine paddlers placed 10th out of 69 crews at the 35th annual Na Wahine O Ke Kai race last Sunday. Paddling 42 miles from Molokai to Oahu against top teams from around the world, the open women’s Molokai crew crossed one of the most difficult channels in the state in 6 hours 46 minutes 11 seconds. They met their goal of placing in the top 10, improving from last year when they finished 14th.

“The biggest struggle is trying not to hit the wall,” said Team Boomski paddler Teon Simmons. “You cheer on your teammates and you try to get into your Zen mode–whatever you got to do to get it done.”…

Molokai Women Paddlers Bring Home Gold

Molokai wahine paddlers swept the Pailolo Challenge last Saturday, taking first place in two divisions. The 25-mile race from Maui to Molokai features one of the windiest channels in Hawaii. Eighty-four teams from all over Hawaii and the west coast with 10 to 12 paddlers per team crossed the finish line at Kaunakakai Harbor Saturday afternoon.

The Wa`akapaemua Open Women’s crew, known as Team Boomski, finished first in their division with a time of 3 hours, 26 minutes, 16 seconds. The Wa`akapaemua 50 Women also took home a first place, in 3:44’17.

“We were super excited, we wanted it,” said team captain Tiana Miguel.…

MHS Athletics Struggle for Funding

Molokai High School Athletics Department is struggling to keep afloat this year, lacking thousands of dollars needed for 196 students in the school’s 12 sports to participate in off-island games. Yet with a $40,000 budget shortfall for travel expenses, Athletic Director Hoku Haliniak is determined to keep Farmers sports programs intact.

“I refuse to cut away games,” said Haliniak. “There has to be a way — where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

To help raise money to save the program, Haliniak said Farmer faithful will be asked to pay an admissions fee to home games this year. Previously, admissions were charged to volleyball and basketball events, but baseball, softball and football will be added to the list this year.…

Fall Sports Gear Up Continued

Steep hills and stiff competition is the theme for Molokai High School’s (MHS) cross country and air riflery teams, yet as another fall season arrives, they are keeping their eyes are on the prize.

Boys Cross Country

The boys cross country team was in the middle of the pack last year. According to 15-year head coach Gandharva “Mahina Hou” Ross, the farmers placed third in the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) championships and 44th out of 160 schools in the state championships.

This fall, the eight-man team is coming back with six returning runners and welcoming two freshmen.

“The returning group is all pretty much at the same level [as each other],” said Ross.…

Fall Sports Gear Up

The Molokai High School (MHS) Farmers are lacing up as fall sports return for another season. Record-breaking roster numbers, new competition, and more tournaments hosted on Molokai create high hopes and expectations for the green and white.

Girls Volleyball

Girls Volleyball is in full swing as they’ve just competed in their volleyball classic last weekend. According to Hoku Haliniak, MHS athletic director, This is the first tournament of its kind on Molokai.

Four teams from Oahu including Henry J. Kaiser High School, Waialua High School, and two teams from President Theodore Roosevelt High School gathered at The Barn Friday. Molokai finished the first day with a 4-4 record, which continued Saturday morning, according to Hoku Haliniak, MHS athletic director.…

Taking on the Big Blue

Since Leahi Camacho, of Kona, Hawaii, was six years old, she said she and the water have been inseparable.

“For as long as I can remember, I have been a distance swimmer,” she said.

Now, the 17-year-old is attempting something not many have successfully accomplished: swimming the 26-mile Ka`iwi Channel between Molokai and Oahu. On Aug. 17 at 11 p.m., she plans to take her last steps on land for about 15 hours. Leaving from Hale O Lono, she will swim through the night for a planned landing the next day at Sandy Beach on Oahu. She hopes to become the youngest swimmer ever to swim the channel.…

The 2013 Ko Molokai Keiki O Ke Kai summer surf series has come to an end, providing dozens of keiki with an opportunity to spend quality with their families and a fun, safe and drug-free activity during the summer break. The series celebrated its 24th anniversary this year, organized by a not-for-profit group of dedicated parents and volunteers to perpetuate the culture and traditions of surfing for the next generation.

With the Maui to Molokai World Cup of SUP (Stand Up Paddle) race on Saturday, July 13, the idea of the Molokai 4 Molokai (M4M) race the following day was born just eight weeks ago. Its goal was to keep paddlers over on Molokai another day, stimulate the local economy and inspire youth.

With only a short time to throw something together, it almost felt like an impossible task. Stand Up Paddle Association of Molokai (SUPAM) and Youth in Motion made M4M a success with a huge boost from sponsors who came in at the last minute, along with the organizers of the Maui to Molokai race, pledges from the racers and community, local, state and international competitors who believed in the concept.…

Young Inventor Hits It Out of the Park

A simple stitch got a young Molokai inventor national recognition and a free Kindle Fire e-reader. Erik Svetin, who will be a freshman at Molokai High School this year, added a row of stitches to a baseball to see if it would affect the distance the ball traveled. He entered his invention in the national Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and was named the Hawaii merit award winner.

“I wanted to do a science fair experiment on my passion, which is baseball,” Svetin said. The additional stitches ran horizontal across the ball and had the same spacing as the existing ones.  …
