Double Race Weekend

Molokai was the center of Stand Up Paddling activity on the weekend of July 12 and 13, with epic down wind paddling conditions for two incredible races on Molokai shores.

First was the M2Molokai race, in which 80 plus competitors crossed the channel from Maui to finish at Kaunakakai wharf, with a close finish between Connor Baxter, 3:04:31, Kai Lenny, 3:06:44 and Dave Kalama, 3:08:58 . Almost half of the competitors stayed over on Molokai to compete in the M4Molokai the following day.

The M4Molokai race ran from Kamalo Wharf to Hotel Molokai, an 8.5 mile perfect downwinder for both novices and advanced paddlers.…

Molokai Youth Takes First in Paddleboard Race

Molokai’s 12-year-old Alex Mawae took the short course by storm with phenomenal finish amongst 300 plus paddlers in the short course of the Hui O He’e Nalu Independence Day Paddleboard and Stand Up paddle race. Alex took first place in his 13 and under divisionand 23rd overall in a virtual no wind race among many solid paddlers. His sister Josie also put in a credible finish to the short course while their mom Clare Mawae finished second in her division with a solid and respectable time in the long course.

The short course was from Sunset beach to Waimea, a four-mile course and the seven-mile long course started from Turtle Bay.…

Baseball Clinches Fifth at States

The Molokai High School (MHS) baseball team scored fifth place in the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division II State Championships on Oahu after consecutive wins over Radford High School and Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

At the start of the state championship, MHS lost to Kauai High School, 8-0 in the quarterfinals on May 14 at Hans L’Orange Field.

On May 15, MHS senior David Rapanot pitched a three-hitter to lead the Farmers to victory over Radford with a 6-0 final score in the semifinal game.

That following Friday, the teamadvanced to play against Hawaii Prep. Molokai Baseball defeated Hawaii Prep 9-2 in six innings at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu to claim fifth place in the state championship.…

Back-to-Back National Champions

A year ago, a flag football team, Packers, competed in the WASUP National Flag Football tournament in Las Vegas, competing against mainland and Hawaii teams.  The Packers are affiliated with the Play Sports Hawaii flag football league on Oahu.  The boys, ages 8-9, set a new record for mercy-ruling all of their opponents and total points scored against them was 6.  They won the 9U Division.

They are coached by Ladd Mokiao, a 1998 graduate of Molokai High School, who was asked to take over as coach for his son, Lathan, and his teammates about 5 years ago. …

Wrestling Club Success

On Saturday, May 10 at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui, Molokai Wrestling Club(MWC)participated in the annual USA Wrestling Hawaii State Tournament with 648 children in attendance.  As more than 25 teams gathered together, youth from preschool through high school prepared to wrestle opponents of similar age and weight with the hopes of ultimately earning a state title.  Though the event may appear to some like organized chaos, to others who love the sport, it is energizing and full of anticipation.

One young wrestler said, “States makes me feel nervous, anxious, and exhausted all at the same time, but the challenge to win makes me so excited!”…

Alex Mawae Takes Lahaina

Twelve-year-old Alex Mawae from Molokai headed to Lahaina last weekend to participate in the Lahaina SUP Surf contest. Having just come back from California taking fourth place in the surfing portion of the Californian event, Alex wanted to see how he faired with the Maui boys. With entries from well-known top international SUP/surfers in the other divisions and a full division of 12 and under, Alex Mawae did well competing against the Maui surfers and taking third place with a very credible performance.

This was Alex’s second SUP/Surfing event compared to the many long distance events he has done since the age 8.…
