Molokai Girl Named Miss Rodeo Hawaii

Last month, Molokai’s Cheyanne Kauionalani Duvauchelle Keliihoomalu got a surprising phone call. She was asked to represent Molokai, Hawaii and the paniolo heritage at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in Las Vegas this December.

Two years ago, the 2008 Molokai High graduate and sixth generation Molokai paniolo earned runner-up in the Miss Hawaii Rodeo competition. She didn’t enter again last year. So she wasn’t expecting to hear from pageant organizers.

“They called out of the blue and asked if I wanted to do [the national pageant],” said Keliihoomalu. “I had to think about it because that only gave me four months to prepare and usually girls in the mainland have at least a year to prepare.”…

The Canadians Are Coming

Team Sports Travel News Release

On Tuesday, Aug. 19, the Molokai Farmers football squad will be playing a scrimmage/game versus a Canadian High School team, who will be visiting the island starting on Sunday, Aug. 17.  The team is from Holy Trinity Academy, in the town of Okotoks, Alberta.  The school traditionally plays Canadian 12-man rules, but for this game the squad will play 8-man rules.    While on Molokai, the athletes and staff will be attending a Mass and working with the Catholic parish on a community service project Monday afternoon, led by Father Petrie.

Athletic Dept. Leadership Changes

Three Molokai High School (MHS) athletic department staff members are leaving their positions this fall, bringing in new, temporary leadership and triggering a lengthy hiring process for permanent replacements.

Athletic Director (AD) Hoku Haliniak has accepted a position with the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) as its Director of Sports Information and will be leaving Molokai this month. She said the assistant athletic director and the athletic trainer are also stepping down for personal reasons.

Haliniak called it “a huge coincidence that everyone’s leaving at the same time.”

Lee DeRouin, MHS science teacher and girls basketball coach, has been named the temporary AD.…

Fall Swim Season Schedule

It’s a new school year, and the Molokai chapter of the Maui Dolphins Swim Club (MDSC) offers an expanded practice schedule for you to fit in your workouts throughout the fall.

Starting Wednesday, Aug. 6, two practices will be held daily, Monday through Thursday.  Morning swims are available to Masters (19+) and advanced age group swimmers from 5:30 to 8 a.m.  Afternoon practices for all ages (5+) will be held 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Masters can come to do their own pool workouts, or can opt for coaching if they like.  Age group swimmers (5-18) are coached at their appropriate ability level. …

Youth in Motion News Release

Youth in Motion will be starting up their Stand Up Paddling season from Aug. 18 through Thanksgiving this year. If anyone is interested in joining Youth in Motion for the 2014/15 year, please come down to their beach area at the harbor on Thursdays Aug. 7 and 14 at 6 p.m. for sign up and learn more about the program for the coming year. Swimming will also be introduced in September and again in 2015.

Youth In Motion is also encouraging adults and youth who are interested in volunteering, planning, coordinating, writing, photography and filming to participate in the program so that they can assist with the website, newsletters, videos, social media, and bring back the festival, “A Celebration of Youth Opportunities,” “Na Opio Hana Pa`a.”…

Molokai was the center of Stand Up Paddling activity on the weekend of July 12 and 13, with epic down wind paddling conditions for two incredible races on Molokai shores.

First was the M2Molokai race, in which 80 plus competitors crossed the channel from Maui to finish at Kaunakakai wharf, with a close finish between Connor Baxter, 3:04:31, Kai Lenny, 3:06:44 and Dave Kalama, 3:08:58 . Almost half of the competitors stayed over on Molokai to compete in the M4Molokai the following day.

The M4Molokai race ran from Kamalo Wharf to Hotel Molokai, an 8.5 mile perfect downwinder for both novices and advanced paddlers.…

Athletic Mandatory Parent Meeting

Due to new policies for the Department of Education, Molokai High School (MHS) Athletic Department will conduct three parent athletic meetings during the sports seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring) for school year 2014-15.

The fall season meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 30 at the Café from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The winter season meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at the MHS Library. The spring season meeting will be on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at the MHS Library. All meetings will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Keiki Make Waves at Last Surf Meet

Keiki surfers took on the waves and competed in fun heats at Waialua Beach last Saturday. They surfed their way through the day with the sun shining, cool winds blowing and light waves crashing to the shoreline, for the last Molokai Keiki O Ke Kai surf meet of the summer.

The meet, made possible through funding provided by Friendly Isle United Fun, was part of the 25th Annual drug and alcohol-free Keiki Surf Meet Series. The event gives aspiring surfers age 13 and younger the opportunity to compete and have fun learning to surf.

If you are interested in diving deeper into the world of surfing, there are numerous opportunities for lessons tailored to young aspiring surfers.…
