Girls Volleyball Starts Strong

The Lady Farmers dominated their home court at the Barn last weekend against Maui Prep, taking both games Friday and Saturday. At Friday night’s game, the girls won three sets 25-10, 25-18, 25-12; on Saturday, they scored 14-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-12.

The team played well for their first game of the season, said head coach Mahea Rawlins. She said she hopes the girls will continue to work on their teamwork.

“I think nerves were coming out for the first game [on Saturday],” Rawlins said. “When they play, they give it their all, but I think there’s still a lot to be worked on.”…

On Tuesday, Aug. 19, the Molokai community was treated to a football game that had a bit of international flair.  The Farmers hosted Holy Trinity Academy from Alberta, Canada.  A group of 26 athletes made the 3,100 mile trip to Hawaii to play in a pre-season matchup.  Both teams agreed to compete in a “controlled” scrimmage format, forgoing any special teams and allowing each team to concentrate on offensive and defensive plays.  The format also gave each team the opportunity to substitute three different groups, giving everyone a chance to play.

Molokai scored on their first offensive drive with a touchdown pass to Kaimana Kahale.  …

Twelve-year-old Alex Mawae from Molokai has had quite the year with the fastest growing water sport of Stand Up Paddling while racking up some credible placings in some notable events. Alex recently competed at the Duke’s Ocean Fest on Oahu, taking second place in the under 17s Juniors division with the 2014 Hawaii Paddleboard Championship. The race started at Hawaii Kai and finished at Queens in Waikiki, a distance of just over nine miles.

“Training and getting ready is both fun and hard but doing the race is the most amazing feeling especially when you cross the finish line,” said Alex.…

In 2012, MHS football became a Maui Interscholastic League (MIL)-sanctioned sport for the first time in 50 years. Since then, six teams have joined the eight-man playing field and the MIL will be welcoming its newest additions, Lanai and Kihei Charter schools, this year.…

Molokai Girl Named Miss Rodeo Hawaii

Last month, Molokai’s Cheyanne Kauionalani Duvauchelle Keliihoomalu got a surprising phone call. She was asked to represent Molokai, Hawaii and the paniolo heritage at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in Las Vegas this December.

Two years ago, the 2008 Molokai High graduate and sixth generation Molokai paniolo earned runner-up in the Miss Hawaii Rodeo competition. She didn’t enter again last year. So she wasn’t expecting to hear from pageant organizers.

“They called out of the blue and asked if I wanted to do [the national pageant],” said Keliihoomalu. “I had to think about it because that only gave me four months to prepare and usually girls in the mainland have at least a year to prepare.”…
