Girls Swim Relay at States

The Molokai High School Girls 200 yard medley relay team competed at the state Swimming and Diving Championships last Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9–10 on Maui, where they finished fourth in their heat. The Lady Farmers swimmers were senior Michelle McGuire, junior Maire Kalawe, sophomore Kapili Naehu-Ramos and sophomore Kayla DeRouin.

Head Coach Amanda Labriola was excited to have Molokai represented at the swimming state championships.

“I am so proud of our girls who placed fourth in their heat and their time was 2 minutes 10 seconds,” she said. “This season went very well I am proud of the team I had this year.…

Boys Basketball Finishes Season

Last week, the Boys Basketball team played in the Maui Interscholastic League Division II tournament, where they won their first game then ended their season in the semifinals game with a 7-5 record.

Molokai played against Haleakala Waldorf, winning 54-30 with 27 points from Senior Kaina Adolpho.

“I was proud of our team for coming together and really playing for each other and they were focused and took care of business so that we were able to advance,” said Head Coach Nohea Pangkee.

The Farmers then advanced to the semifinals and faced the host Lanai Pine Lads (10-3). The Farmers played well in a close game but came up short and lost 43-37.…

Girls Paddling 8th in State

The Girls Canoe Paddling team battled on the water all day at Hilo Bay last Saturday in the state Canoe Paddling Championships. The Lady Farmers made it through preliminaries, then semi-finals, to make it to the finals race. The finished eighth in the state with a time of 4:39.88.

Head Coach Stefani Hubbard was proud of her crew for advancing to the state final.

“The girls put up a tough fight last Saturday kicking and scratching their way to make it to finals,” she said. “Though they fell short of our goal, the fact that they tried their best and left everything they had out on that water, they are still able to walk away feeling accomplished.”…

Girls Basketball Closes Season

The Lady Farmers fell short in the semi-finals of the Maui Interscholastic League Division II Girls Basketball tournament two weeks ago on Maui. They lost to the Lanai Pine Lasses (4-6) 49-36 and finished the season at 2-7. It was the fifth meeting of the season between the two teams. Junior Kaitlin DeRouin led Molokai with 20 points. Lanai ultimately fell to champion Seabury (8-1) Friday night 49-41. The Trojans are the lone representative to this year state tournament from the MIL DII league.

Head Coach Shane Mokiao said his girls gave it their all in the semifinal game.

“It was a great game but unfortunately we came out short,” he said.…

Wrestling Sends 9 to States

 

After expectation-exceeding results for the Molokai Wrestling team at the Maui Interscholastic League Championships last weekend, nine wrestlers will compete at states Feb. 14-15. As a team, the girls finished third, and the boys took fourth place at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Head Coach Randy Manley was extremely proud of his wrestlers.

“Overall our guys and girls did well and some did better than anticipated,” he said. “Kamahina Kaiama-Kanuha (128 pounds) and Martika English (184) both beat opponents in the semi-final round that they had previously lost to. Caele Manley (154) and Diego DePonte (162) were our stand out first place winners for the boys and both secured nail biting one point victories over their opponents in the finals.…

The Boys Basketball team hosted the Hana Dragons last weekend at The Barn, where the Farmers won both games. They finished their regular season at 6-4 and will play Haleakala Waldorf Wednesday night on Lanai in the MIL DII Boys Basketball Tournament quarter-finals. 2 More Wins for Boys Basketball

 

The Boys Basketball team came away with a sweep of two victories last weekend when they faced the St. Anthony Trojans at War Memorial Gymnasium. On Friday, the Farmers (4-4) won 59-41 and were led by seniors Kaina Adolpho with 19 points and Shraedon Naeole-Starkey with 16 points. On Saturday, Molokai beat the Trojans (4-4) 51-25 and were led by junior Stephen Agcaoili with 14 points. Naeole-Starkey added 10.

Head Coach Nohea Pangkee is pleased that his team is finding its groove with four wins in a row.

“The team is improving every day and we’re just trying to get two percent better every practice,” he said.…

Girls Paddling 3rd in League

 

Molokai will have representation on the water at the State Canoe Paddling Championships this year. The Molokai High School Girls Paddling team finished third in the Maui Interscholastic League Championships last Saturday, securing a spot in the State race this weekend at Hilo Bay.

Head Coach Stefani Hubbard was happy to qualify and recognize her seniors.

“It was a great day,” she said. “We honored our seniors and everyone on the team got to race. The girls didn’t quite finish where we wanted, but we still qualified for States and we have this week to get ready for it.”

Team members are Ashawna Davis, Hulilau Albino, Tatiana Mollena Na-o, Talia Nakayama, Cahlvrie Horner, Kaydence Kalawe-Oswald, Sherie Kaili, Shai Rawlins and Marion Powell.…

Swim Relay Qualifies for States

 

The Molokai Girls 200 meter Relay team qualified for the state swim race last weekend. The Molokai High School Boys and Girls Swimming teams participated in the MIL Swimming Championships at Kihei Aquatic Center, and during the two days of competition, the girls relay team swam a qualifying time.

“They made the top eight in the MIL like everyone else who swam today but then they had to get the qualifying time in the relay to make states,” explained Head Coach Amanda Labriola.

Sophomore Jalen Kalama finished fourth in the 100m Backstroke but did not qualify for states.

The relay team consists of Kayla DeRouin-Sophomore, Michelle McGuire-Senior, Maire Kalawe-Junior and Kapili Naehu-Ramos-Sophomore.…

Molokai Wrestling Hosts Tournament

 

Molokai wrestlers gave their family and friends a lot to cheer for last weekend when they hosted a round robin tournament at The Barn and boasted 17 top three finishes.

“Once every couple of years the Farmers Boys and Girls Wrestling teams get the opportunity to host a tournament in the Barn that includes the top teams from the MIL — Lahainaluna, Baldwin, Maui High, Kamehameha and King Kekaulike,” said Head Coach Randy Manley. “This past Friday and Saturday was that opportunity and our teams showed that they can compete with the best that the MIL has to throw at us.”…
