Football Opens Season with Win

The Molokai Eight-Man football team traveled to Hawaii Island last weekend and got a hard fought 14-8 win over the Pahoa Daggers. The Farmers (1-0) held the Daggers (0-1) to just one TD under the lights at Keeau High School field.

Head Coach Mike Kahale was pleased with his teams play.

“It was a hard fought defensive battle and when Pahoa scored first we needed to keep our composure and stick to the game plan,” he said. “We made some adjustments at half time, but more than anything we just needed the boys to settle in, play their assignments and execute.”…

Little League Honors ‘The Professor’

The Molokai Little League is hosting the District III 9-10 Minors tournament at Kaunakakai Ballpark. At the opening ceremonies last Saturday, a Molokai resident was honored for his 59 years of involvement in Little League as coach, umpire, scorekeeper and PA announcer at the local, district and state levels.

Filemon “David” Nanod was given the Little League’s Volunteer Award for his years of dedication. Known as “The Professor” of Molokai Little League Baseball, the 92-year-old is  also a Molokai National Guard veteran.

Many special people were on hand to celebrate and talk about Nanod, including Senator Kalani English, Representative Lynn DeCoite and Councilwoman Stacy Helm Crivello.…

Football Summer Camp

Three student-athletes from the Molokai High School Football team attended the prestigious GPA Showcase Football camp at the UH campus June 5-6. Clancey Wright Jr., Kaimana Nakayama and Tofi Ah Van all participated and were coach by Rich Miano, Jesse Sapolu and Ma’a Tanuvasa. Athletes learn skills and college coaches run the sessions and clinics.  Athletes also build position specific skills and coaches get to see talent and potentially recruit up and coming athletes. Clancey placed in the top three for Defensive Lineman at the camp.

Molokai Head Coach Mike Kahale said the camp is a good one for our athletes.…

Young Cowboy to Compete Nationally

Molokai seventh grader Kahiwa Augustiro will be taking his rodeo skills on the road this summer. Kahiwa is among 10 in the state who earned spots in the 14th annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo, set for June 24-30 in Huron, South Dakota. They earned spots on the Hawaii team with their performances at the Hawaii High School Rodeo Association Junior State Finals, held on May 11-12 at Haleakala Ranch and Kaonoulu Ranch on Maui.

Only the top four in each event can advance to nationals. Kahiwa will be competing in the breakaway roping, chute dogging, team roping, ribbon roping, steer bareback bronc riding and bull riding.…

Schonely Awarded for Sports Reporting

The Molokai Dispatch’s sports reporter Rick Schonely was awarded by Molokai High School for his collaboration efforts with the school and highlighting student athlete accomplishments. Schonely was among a handful of community members and organizations honored with the school’s No Ka Heke award at a luncheon last week.

“Molokai High School acknowledges the contributions and collaboration efforts of our community partners in conveying the school’s vision and mission,” reads the award. “This award is given to our community partners who exemplify ‘No Ka Heke’ spirit of being ‘Molokai Mo Better.'”

Schonely writes weekly sports stories in The Molokai Dispatch, films Sports Report videos on social media, and sometimes even accompanies teams to off-island sporting events.…
