As with everything else over the last year, 2021 Ka Molokai Makahiki looked different. There were no traditional games played or roaring crowds to cheer on favorite competitors in hukihuki, kukini, uma or haka moa. Instead, a small group of dedicated and masked Hawaiians carried the banner of Lono on foot from one end of the island to the other, starting on Jan. 25.

“For the first time in 39 years, due to the pandemic, the Ka Molokai Makahiki Games were canceled… the Lono banner was carried for five days from east Molokai at Halawa to west Molokai at Hale o Lono in celebration of the closing of the season of peace,” wrote one of the event’s organizers, Walter Ritte, on social media.…

Two golf tournaments at the iconic Ironwood Hills Golf course got three residents wins recently.

The 2020 Molokai Teachers’ Winter Classic was held Dec. 21. Congratulations to Bob Danner for winning the low gross Horns Trophy and Jacket and Scott Hemenway for winning the low net Bowl Trophy. Big aloha to the leader of Farmer nation and the tournament organizer, Lee DeRouin!

David Spencer is the January 2021 monthly Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. After shooting 82 (42-40) and with his 19 handicap, his net 63 got him the first Ace of the new year!…

MHS Alum to Finish College Football Career

Molokai High alumnus Makani Kaneaiakala will continue and finish his college football career at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM. He began playing at Eastern Arizona College as a freshman in 2017, before enrolling at Tabor College in Kansas two years later. Since then, he has had some bumps in the road but is now back to the game.

“After being in the NCAA Transfer Portal for some time I can finally say I’ll be returning to action,” said Kaneaiakala. “I’m beyond thankful and blessed for another opportunity after all the struggles I’ve went through this year; it was a such a tough stretch with COVID-19, school, work, training, a potential career ending injury which healed, eligibility paperwork, and made some very tough sacrifices.”…

Schonely Wins Ace of Aces

The Molokai Dispatch’s own Sports Reporter is this years Hui O Kukui Golf Club’s Ace of Aces. Rick Schonely won the end of the year club championship and will have his name engraved on the Carl Puhi perpetual trophy as the 2020 Club Champion and the Ace of Aces for the club.

Schonely shot 42-39 for a gross total of 81 and with his 16 handicap his net was 65 and he secured the win. The winner of the Hui O Kukui club championship at the end of the year is officially named the president of the club for 2021.…

Golf Aces to Play Off

Molokai High School Athletic Director Lee DeRouin is the December Ace for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. DeRouin shot 39-39 for a gross total of 78 and with his 10 handicap his net 68 got him the victory.

He is the last qualifier for the clubs Ace of Aces Tournament on Dec. 5 at iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course. All 12 Ace winners from this year will play off for the club championship.…

Jeff Egusa is the November Ace for The Hui O Kukui Golf Club. The monthly Ace Tournament was held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Ironwood Hills Golf Course. Egusa shot 37-40 for a gross total of 77 and with his 11 handicap he had a net score of 66 for the win.…

The Hui O Kukui monthly Ace tournament was held on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Ironwood Hills Golf Course. The winner was The Molokai Dispatch’s own Sports Reporter Rick Schonely. Schonely shot 40-43 for a gross total of 83 and with his 14 handicap his net 69 finished in first place.

“I would like to thank Ironwoods Hills and all of the Molokai golfers that I play with that have helped me to become a better person and a better golfer,” he said. “We enjoy competing against each other but the best part is having fun and getting good exercise.…

Pastrana Will Play College Softball

On Molokai, many grow up living the baseball life and Felicity “Wehi” Pastrana has excelled at softball and baseball since she can remember.
“I cannot remember a time, where I was not at a baseball park. I practically grew up or lived at the Little League Park,” she said. “My brother started playing Little League at the age of 5, the year I turned 1, and ever since then I was always at the park.”

With the current COVID-19 times, spring sports were cancelled, and the Lady Farmers Softball season was not to be but Pastrana will continue her softball career at the college level at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon in the fall.…
