Molokai Holokai Goes Virtual

Like every other sporting event last year, COVID-19 cancelled the annual 2020 Molokai Holokai, a paddling competition of friendly fun for locals as well as acclaimed paddlers and stand up paddlers of all ages. The pandemic also cancelled this summer’s event due to state rules and restrictions, said organizer Clare Albino. But then she decided to try something different – a virtual competition.

“Participants can make their own course in any place, anywhere in the world to make their distances and even break it down in stages and or days,” said Albino, explaining participants upload pictures and times to a virtual leader board, allowing the event to continue during a window that’s open right now.…

Last Friday’s Summer Classic at iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course produced two winners. Lee DeRouin (low gross) and Kaleo Len Wai (low net) took home the trophies! A great time was had by all and the tournament was dedicated to Maurice Sonny “Bully” Lindsey and his ‘ohana.

Earlier in the week, recently retired MPD dispatcher Henrietta Helm was named the June Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Etta shot 40-44 for a gross score of 84 and with her 18 handicap her net 66 secured the win.…

New Case, J&J Vaccine on Hold, Canoe Races Cancelled

One new Molokai COVID-19 case was reported by the Dept. of Health last week, bring the island’s total to 35 cases since the pandemic began.

The Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) had anticipated offering the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine starting last week but those plans came to a halt when the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended pausing administering of the the J&J nationally following six cases being reported of rare and severe side effects. Out of the 6.8 million people in the U.S. who received the J&J vaccine, six women between the ages of 18 and 48 developed blood clots, with symptoms occurring six to 13 days after vaccination.…

Flag Football Starts for Middle School

Molokai Middle School is hosting a flag football season, creating an intra-school league to keep competitions safe.

This past February, the Maui Middle Schools Athletics Initiative, sponsored by the REACH Program, approved outdoor sports and Molokai Middle School is a participating member.

Coach Mike Kahale said instead of traveling to Maui to compete against other middle schools as they have done in the past, MMS launched the intra-school league.

“Normally, we would have just one team travel off-island to compete,” said Kahale, who is also the MHS head football coach. “Now we have four teams with over 40 student-athletes competing against one another here on Molokai.”…

Athletics Dept. Plans for Resumed Sports

Molokai High School athletics leadership is excited to be able to resume athletic workouts and practices with COVID-19 safety guidelines and protocols set forth by the Department of Education and Department of Health. Six sports can begin by the end of this month, with exact start dates to be announced.

“We highly encourage our spring sport student-athletes to update their current physical form and consent form during this time to be eligible to practice,” said Athletic Director Lee DeRouin. “Student athletes can pick up these forms at school during the day from [myself] or Athletic Trainer and at milsports.org…

Spring Sports Given OK to Practice

Athletic workouts for high school spring sports can begin on Monday, March 8, Maui Interscholastic League executive board president Jamie Yap confirmed last Thursday. The status of when and if competition can commence will be determined by the MIL athletic directors soon. Yap said he expects MIL executive director Joe Balangitao to convene a meeting of athletic directors soon.

Yap is very encouraged by the news. He said he feels it is crucial to get the spring sports onto the field in some sense because that season was the first to be canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic last March.…
