Disappointing News for Football Season

Molokai High 8-Man Football held their first Green and White scrimmage last Friday afternoon.

Head Coach Mike Kahale and his staff and players were happy to be out on the field again. 

“It was an exciting scrimmage and a great opportunity for our boys to play at ‘game’ speed and intensity,” he said. “It was a defensive battle with Team White prevailing in a 8-6 victory.”

Nakoa Orlando scored on an outside run for Team Green and Clarence Tanabe caught a long touchdown pass from Angelo Duvachelle for Team White.

Kahale was hoping for some Maui Interscholastic League games after 19 months of no games, but got some disappointing news. …

Home Wins for Girls Volleyball

The Lady Farmers volleyball team got their first wins of the season last weekend while hosting St. Anthony at the Barn. 

Last Friday, Molokai took the victory over St. Anthony 3-0 in three sets, 25-8, 25-6 and 25-10. Molokai’s Lia-Chae Meyer had 10 kills, Jordyn McCutcheon had nine kills and Daisci Burrows added 29 assists. 

On Saturday, the two teams faced off again, with the Lady Farmers again taking the win 3-0, with set scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-7. Meyer had 11 kills, McCutcheon added another nine kills and Burrows came in with 28 assists. …

MHS Farmers Get Back to Sports

After not being able to compete for more than a year and a half because of COVID-19, Molokai High athletes are excited to be back to practicing for a season of competition. It’s been a bumpy road of hurdles, false starts and frustrations but “things are going in the right direction.”

“I’m very proud of our coaches and our kids doing their best to get out on the fields doing what they need to do,” said MHS Athletic Director Lee DeRouin. “I’m really proud of their attitudes. That’s what sports teaches us… there’s ups and downs and we’re getting through it and moving in the right direction.”…

Molokai High School athletic director and legendary Molokai golfer Lee DeRouin is the October Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. DeRouin shot 39-38 for a gross score of 77. With his 13 handicap his net score of 64 secured his win. DeRouin now qualifies for the December Ace of Aces tournament.…

Mike Prewitt is the September Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Sir Micky shot 48-50 for a gross score of 98 and with his 32 handicap his net score of 66 got him the victory. With the victory, Prewitt qualifies for the December Ace of Aces Tournament.…

Billy Moore is the August Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Moore shot 51-54 for a total of 105 and with his 36 handicap his net score of 69 got him into a playoff with Rick Schonely and Dana Takashima. Moore won on the first playoff hole with a par and his handicap stroke.…

County Gym to Reopen

County of Maui News Release

The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation is preparing to reopen gymnasium facilities that have been closed for recreational use since March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, including Molokai’s gym in Kaunakakai.

It’s great to welcome our residents back into County gyms for basketball, volleyball and more,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “The special tri-annual permit process offers a fair way for leagues and others to reserve recreational athletic use of our County gym facilities. Molokai Wins at Makawao Rodeo

Molokai paniolo came home well-decorated from the 4th of July Makawao Stampede rodeo on Maui. Sale Sproat was named the weekend’s coveted All Around Cowboy after a series of wins in various events, Kahiwa Augustiro placed third in bull riding and third in steer wrestling, while his brother Chevy Augustiro earned second place in steer wrestling, Sproat’s daughter, Bailey Sproat, won the second heat of steer undecorating, and Lane Kamakana competed as well.

After spending the first few days of the rodeo in roping events, Sunday brought five events for Sale Sproat. He won his first event of the day, Po’o Wai U, and gained a personal best of 17.26 seconds, before moving on to Ranch Bronc Riding, winning the event with an eight-second ride.…
