Schonely Retires as Sports Reporter

After seven years of providing sports coverage in The Molokai Dispatch, Rick Schonely said he will be stepping back from the role of sports reporter.

In 2015, following his retirement from the Maui Fire Dept., Schonely began contributing to The Molokai Dispatch’s sports coverage, whether taking photos, writing stories, sharing his “Sports Reports” on Facebook, sending scores or keeping in touch with alumni athletes. We appreciate his dedication to Molokai’s student athletes and making sure their accomplishments are celebrated in the paper.

Schonely said he’ll be taking more time to play golf and spend with his ‘ohana but will still stay close to sports at Molokai High. …

Ponciano Raguindin and Kaleo Len-Wai are the winners of the Horns Summer Classic held by the Molokai Teachers at Iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course on Friday, June 24. Raguindin was the low gross winner with a score of 80 and Len-Wai was the low net winner with a score of 67.

All the participants had a great day of golf and fellowship. Mahalo to Athletic Director Lee DeRouin of organizing the event and mahalo to the staff of Ironwoods for continuing the tradition of golf on Molokai. …

Football Camp Brings Talent and Excitement

Touchdown! Molokai youth interested in football have an amazing opportunity to up their game next week. The second Football Skills Camp, brought to the island by Molokai High alum Ry Akana and his Washington State-based company Akana Athletics, is bringing a lineup of top coaches and athletes to kickstart skills and excitement for the sport.

Racing on the Water Again

Last Saturday kicked off the summer’s canoe paddling season with the first race at Kaunakakai Wharf since the COVID pandemic. Paddlers of all ages from Molokai’s canoe clubs vied for the first across the finish line in ¼ mile and ½ mile races, some crews in it just for fun and some competing for a qualifying time to enter this year’s state canoe race in August. Races will be held at the wharf every other Saturday in June and July. …

The Farmers Baseball team closed their undefeated season with two losses at the State Division II Baseball Championship in Hilo. On Thursday, the team played Damien Memorial School, with an 8-2 score. 

“We battled and did the best we could do,” said Head Coach Keahi Rawlins. “Gavin [Ainoa] gave it his all on the mound and we made some crucial errors that hurt us. Effort and intensity I felt was there but mental mistakes and physical errors on both sides of the ball affected the outcome. Damien plays against top notch clubs and they played well hats off to them.”…

The Molokai High Track and Field team closed their season at the Maui Interscholastic League Championships last week. Though the team didn’t qualify for states, Head Coach Kabbie Bicoy-Juario said athletes logged many personal records. 

“Great season to our runners and throwers,” she said. “It was another battle with a windy season but it didn’t stop them from practice and competition. We had a few fell short from states but everyone made new personal records. We’re excited for next year and already planning it out.”

She thanked coaches Micah, Isaiah and Dave, as well as the athletic department for their support.…

Judo Preps for States, Track Heads to MILs

Four Molokai judoka won titles at the Maui Interscholastic League Championships last weekend, while two more earned second places and all six will be advancing to states this Saturday. 

Kaia Yamashita won the championship at 109 pounds, Sonni Han took the 154 division title, ‘Ekolu Horner won first place at 178 pounds and Nalu Kalipi won gold at 220 pounds. Kiliohu Duvauchelle took second at 109 pounds and Ara Puaa also earned silver at 172 pounds. 

The State Judo Championships will be held on May 7 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. 

The Track team competed in its last regular season meet last weekend and are headed to the MIL championships this weekend. …

Softball, Tennis End Their Seasons

The Lady Farmers went to bat at the Maui Interscholastic League Softball tournament on Lanai, closing their season short of the win. On Thursday, Molokai beat Hana 15-6, advancing to the final game. Lanai bested Molokai 15-6 in four innings on Friday, winning the championship and the state berth.  “Great moments are born from great opportunity.  As a coaching staff we are so very proud of our Lady Farmers Softball team and the progress they have made this season,” said Head Coach Kalei Pastrana. “Although they fell short this weekend, they played with a lot of heart. …
