The July 24th political forum, broadcast live from Akaku Studio on Dairy Road, was a very interesting experience.  The forum was sponsored by Akaku, Kula Community Association and the Maui News.  We were told that the broadcast was to be only 30 minutes, and our responses were limited to two minutes each.  Kalani English, Kanoho Helm and I participated in this forum.

We were told where to sit and to affix the microphone to our attire close to the neck opening.  As we took our seats, Kanoho greeted Kalani addressing him as “cousin” and me as “aunty.” …

Stacy Helm Crivello for County Council

County Council candidate and Kalama`ula Homestead resident Stacy Helm Crivello lives by the mantra: “Bringing back to Molokai.” Whether that means jobs, resources or community programs, Crivello insists that one of her top priorities is to ensure the Molokai community thrives.

Crivello describes this community as a “sharing and caring” one, for which she is thankful to be a part of. She believes serving as a council member would be a chance for her to give back to the community, and in April, she filed as a candidate for the Molokai seat on the Maui County Council, currently held by outgoing Council Chairman Danny Mateo.…

Manuwai Peters for County Council

While many on the Friendly Isle know Manuwai Peters as a kumu and the founder of the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program (HLIP) on Molokai, less may know that he is a candidate for the Molokai seat in the Maui County Council.

“I am running in this race because it is my time to step up and apply my skills to making Molokai a better place for residents,” Peters said, via email.

The Kalama`ula homesteader said he is grateful to call Molokai home. He first started the HLIP on Molokai in 1992, and since then has helped to create immersion programs at Kualapu`u School, Molokai Intermediate School and Molokai High School.…

Ekolu Kalama Runs for House of Representatives

Molokai-born Ekolu Kalama wears many hats –world champion stand-up paddler and surfer, celebrated musician who just released his first full-length album, owner of surf and lifestyle brand “EK,” father and husband. To add to his already long list of accomplishments, Kalama, who now lives on Maui, has filed for candidacy to run for District 12 (Spreckelsville –Upcountry Maui) of the Hawaii House of Representatives.
Kalama is running as a Republican against Democratic incumbent Kyle Yamashita.

Though Kalama has no formal experience in government or politics, he said he hopes to use this opportunity to “get [his] feet wet and learn the system.”…

Kanohowailuku Helm News Release

Kanohowailuku Helm’s campaign for the District 7 Senate seat went to Maui Thursday morning, July 5. He will be traveling and canvassing on the island through this week. He will appear in the Kalawao Paniolo Parade on July 7 at 9 a.m., at Saint Mary’s Church in Hana the next day at noon, and will be visiting Maui Community College on July 13. Other events are being scheduled and will be posted as soon as times are certain.

Last weekend I was lost in the beauty and hospitality of Hana. Not only did I survive the winding road to Hana, I met a lot of local people who welcomed me unconditionally. I traveled to Hana with my friends Connie and Hanako both from Oahu. Hanako, who graduated from Hana High School, was eager to visit with friends and family and although her parents, the Tanakas, passed on some years ago, the family home still welcomed relatives and friend travelers.

We left Kahului Airport on Friday morning and made our way to Hana via Pukalani and Makawao.…

IAM President Kanoho Helm to run for Senate

After the legislature’s controversial last-minute passage of Senate Bill 2785, which created the regulatory framework for an interisland undersea electric cable, I Aloha Molokai (IAM) President Kanohowailuku Helm felt the need to fight. The Molokai local recently filed with the state Election Office to run as an independent for Hawaii’s 7th Senate District seat, and said he’s after one simple policy: honesty and transparency in government.

“It’s not anything I ever thought I would do, but I’m pushed to do it because I love my people…It’s time for [my generation] to step up and bring a change,” Helm said.…
