Kalaupapa Photo Exhibit Opens

Ka `Ohana O Kalaupapa News Release

“A Reflection of Kalaupapa: Past, Present and Future,” an exhibit of about 100 photographs of Kalaupapa and her people will open at the Molokai Museum and Cultural Center in Kalae on Saturday, Sept. 27, with a blessing at 10 a.m.

Opening day festivities, open to the public, will run through 2 p.m. The museum will waive entry fees on that day only. The exhibit will be on display at the museum through Aug. 29, 2015.

The exhibit was produced by Ka `Ohana O Kalaupapa, a nonprofit that includes Kalaupapa residents, family members/descendants and friends of the community.…

Molokai Homesteaders Gardening Program

We will be starting a home gardening program this month for Molokai Hawaiian homesteaders. The purpose of this workshop series is to encourage homesteaders to grow their own vegetables and herbs, thereby increasing access to fresh, nutritious food. This program is open to both agricultural and residential homesteaders on Molokai, but you must have access to water on your homestead lot.

The program will focus on twice-monthly instruction, including hands-on field demonstrations in setting up and maintaining a 20 by 20-foot ground-based garden, and classroom study. Classes will be taught at a learning level for both homesteaders who haven’t previously grown a garden, as well as those presently tending a garden.…

Hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Always check out our monthly special!  This month all denim and chinos are priced at either $0.50 or $1.

Children’s Theatre for Fall Break

Molokai Arts Center announces a new Fall School Intercession program Oct. 6-9 all about the art of theatre performance.   The Hana Keaka theatre classes, with Kumu Maile Naehu, will be for kids ages 5 to 11, held at the Molokai Arts Center studio, located at the beautiful Coffees of Hawaii location in Kualapu`u.

In four days, the Hana Keaka classes will introduce students to acting storytelling and movement, voice exercises, and end the series with a final family performance.  Children will be welcome to stay during the lunch hour to help with painting a backdrop for the final performance. …

OHA Opens Grant Process

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs today announced it is making $8.9 million total in grant money available to community-based organizations that can help address key priorities of improving conditions for Native Hawaiians.

Starting Wednesday, Sept. 17, community-based organizations will be able to apply for between $100,000 and $500,000 in grant money to fund any one of six specific priorities meant to help enhance OHA’s efforts.

The deadline to apply for an OHA grant is Dec. 17, 2014; the grants would fund a two-year period between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2017. For those on Molokai interested in applying, there will be an orientation meeting held on-island on Thursday, Sept.…

Walk for Sight

The Molokai Lions Club third annual Walk for Sight on Molokai will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27, Saturday, from 7:30 to 10 a.m.  Registration is in front of Kalele Bookstore.  Club members urge the community to join them in their multiple treks through Kaunakakai raising money for continued sight programs on Molokai.

All money raised in this event remains on Molokai. The sight programs include offering help to anyone who is underserved in their need for sight or hearing assistance, vision screening for elementary and preschool children, and the retina vision van project of detection for adults.…

Sust`aina ble Molokai and the FoodCorps service members invite the community to join us Thursday morning, Sept. 11, in a Day of Service to honor the sacrifice of those  who were lost and those who united in response to the tragedy that occured on Sept. 11, 2001.

In honor of all those who past, we will be planting trees on our permaculture farm behind the Molokai High School (MHS). These trees represents the spirit of unity and compassion that followed 9/11.
