Women’s March-Hawaii, in partnership with Kalele Bookstore, invites Molokai residents to talk story with Teresa, on April 19  from 5 to 7pm at Kalele Bookstore and Divine Expressions. Teresa is a retired lawyer and an educator who spent 30 years working for social justice, representing underserved communities, advocating for youth, and helping victims of domestic violence.…

Beekeeping for Beginners Workshop

A workshop for beekeeping for beginners will be held at Pu`u O Hoku Ranch on Tuesday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. Topics will include honey bee biology, beekeeping equipment, starting a honey bee colony, hive management and honey production.

Instructors are Laura Mijares and Tim Haarmann, who live in southwestern Colorado and have been keeping bees for almost three decades. Over the years, they have worked in most aspects of beekeeping including owning and operating a beekeeping business, teaching beekeeping courses around the globe, consulting in short- and long-term agriculture development projects, and honey bee research.…

Conservation Youth Programs and Jobs

Local nonprofit Kupu is now accepting applicants for its summer and year-round conservation education and workforce development programs on Molokai.

Kupu’s Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC) Summer program is seeking five members between 17 and 20 years old and one team leader, 21 and over, who are interested in a full-time summer education and job opportunity on Molokai.

HYCC Summer participants will work as a team, learning conservation work at unique natural resource management sites across the island, including Kalaupapa National Park, Ka Honua Momona, Molokai Land Trust, Sust`ainable Molokai and The Nature Conservancy. In addition to gaining hands-on job training, members will also receive a $500 volunteer award, $1,222 scholarship to use toward higher education or student loans, and may also apply the program toward fulfilling the Dept.…

Update: DHHL Water Given the All Clear

Effective immediately, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) is lifting the water usage restriction for Molokaʻi residents who receive their potable water from the Hoʻolehua reservoirs.

The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) completed the microbiological and chemical testing of the Hoʻolehua water system and has determined that it is safe to resume normal water usage and consumption.

This coming Memorial Day weekend, May 27-31, the sounds of the happiest instrument on earth will once again fill the lodge at Pu`u O Hoku Ranch as the Ukulele Ohana Molokai workshop and its teacher Lono, return for the fifth year.

Molokai College Graduation

Once every four years, the college invites the community to join us in honoring our University of Hawaii Maui College (UHMC), Molokai graduates.  On Friday, May 13, we held our quadrennial commencement ceremony to celebrate the awarding of 87 Associate Degrees, 17 Bachelors Degrees and 12 Masters Degrees since 2012.

There were 42 graduates who participated in the commencement ceremony.  The graduates’ ages ranged from 17-59; representing 42 years of separation.  Shyla Purdy-Avelino was the youngest graduate to ever earn her Associate Degree on Molokai at the age of 17.  She double majored in Liberal Arts and Hawaiian Studies and is planning to pursue a Bachelors Degree at the University of Hawaii in Hilo in the Fall. …

Noted artist and author, Mr. Hooper Dunbar, will speak on Tuesday, May 31 at 5:30 p.m. at Kalele Bookstore in Kaunakakai.

His topic is the title of his book, “Forces of Our Time: The Dynamics of Light and Darkness,” which addresses the many forces at play in the age in which we live and how spirit manifests itself in the realm of matter as capacity is developed.

Dunbar’s artistic works have been featured in shows by the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the National Academy of Arts in Shanghai and at the United Nations in New York City, among others.…

The Molokai Community Plan

Aha Kiole o Molokai News Release

The Maui County Planning Department started the review process for The Molokai Community Plan, which included many meetings of different groups and covered all aspects of Molokai. At first, the Molokai community was not participating, so the Aha Kiole got involved and held five meetings in each of the five Moku to let people know what was going on, how important the Molokai Community Plan was and ask people what they wanted to put into the plan.

Last week, the plan came before the Molokai Planning Commission for the final of many Commission meetings. The Aha Kiole o Molokai, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, UH Law School and many in the Molokai community joined forces to make sure the mana`o of our community was pa`a in the plan.…
