Hawaii has more than 140 different soil types, the most diverse of anywhere on the planet. Each soil is managed differently and responds to different nutrients and amendments. The formation of soil is influenced by temperature, rainfall, slope, and also age and content of the parent material from which the soil is formed. Volcanic eruptions are all unique in what types of soil it will create over time, some very rich in nutrients and others devoid of key nutrients. Molokai Arts Center (MAC) announces its fifth annual Soup’ R Bowl fundraising event, a fundraiser for the arts and art education on Molokai.

The MAC signature annual fundraising event is quickly coming up on March 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. Join us for an evening of delicious soups, artisan bread, fresh island green salad, a full lineup of live entertainment, a silent auction featuring a variety of art from local artists, and the many local artists, themselves, who make this event possible with their creative work!

Small Business Revitalization Grants

Maui County OED News Release

Funding for small business revitalization is available for Molokai and Hana, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED) announced. The grant awards will range from $500 to $5000; nonprofit entities are not eligible for this program. Small Business Revitalization grants totaling $24,000 were awarded to small businesses on Lanai, and applications are now being accepted for a second round of grants for businesses in Hana and on Molokai.

The small business revitalization grants are designed to assist businesses with fewer than 10 employees who do business in Maui County’s rural communities such as Hana and Molokai, which have been identified as the areas hardest hit in their ability to recover from the economic downturn of the past few years.…

Ho`ola Hou Community-Based Scholarship

MOM Hui News Release

The MOM Hui’s 2015-2016 Ho’ola Hou Community-Based Scholarship application was released on Feb. 11, 2014.

There are six awards available in the amount is $1,103.  Individuals who are seeking an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or higher degree in one of the following areas: Health, Environmental Studies, Sustainable/Organic Farming or Hawaiian Studies may be eligible.

The completed application and supporting documents are due on April 15.

Mahalo to the generous donation of the Molokai Environmental Protection Act and the many, many contributions from members of our Molokai community for contributing to this annual fund.

“I don’t have enough time!”  How often have we said this?  What tasks need to be done?  How am I ever going to wade through all this “stuff?”  The Kuha`o Business Center (KBC) is presenting a workshop on Time Management on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. as a way to answer these questions.

Each of us has tasks we need to accomplish for self, work, and family.  Some of the subjects to be discussed are: How to organize your day, how to set priorities, and the importance of information storage and its retrieval.  The workshop will be based on the work of David Allen, who has written three books on the subject. …

MMS STEM News Release

Molokai Middle’s STEM Science Olympians came away with four awards and five medals from the 2015 Maui Regional Science Olympiad Tournament at Maui College on Saturday Jan. 31. (http://www.hsso.org/kd/hsso-tournaments/maui-regional-tournament/).

Robotics driver Kawohi Duvauchelle came away with the second place award and medal for the RoboCross event.  Bridge Builders Taye Mowat and Mary Grace Ringor came away with the second place award and medals for Bridge Building, and Bridge Builders Acey Reyes and Mary Rose Ringor came away with the first place award and medals for Bridge Building.  The entire MMS team also received the Special Team Award from the tournament overall.…

Molokai cowboy, farmer, teacher and steward of the land, Jimmy Duvauchelle, will be Grand Marshall at this year’s Oahu Prince Kuhio Day Parade. The Oahu Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs is proud to have Duvauchelle ride in the parade to honor Prince Kuhio on March 28.

Retired from Molokai Ranch after 45 years of service, he is humble pastor and great family man. Duvauchelle exemplifies the examples of Prince Kuhio in his ways of reaching and teaching the community and all involved with him the love and respect of the aina.…

Molokai Food Hub in Operation

Sust`aina ble Molokai News Release

Sust`aina ble Molokai’s newly launched Molokai Food Hub is seeking locally grown fruits and vegetables.  In January, we officially became the vendor for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for Maunaloa Elementary School.  This is a federally funded snack program, which allows students to receive a snack of a fresh fruit or vegetable two to three times per week.  As the vendor, we are aiming to provide as much Molokai-grown fruit and vegetables as possible, so please call or email us if you would like to be a supplier (560-5410 or harmonee@sustainablemolokai.org).

The program is open to growers who can provide 60 servings of fresh fruit or vegetable (minimum serving size of 1/2 cup), and they will be paid fair market value. …
