The public is invited to provide input, learn more about NextEra and how the proposed merger with Hawaiian Electric Industries will advance a more affordable clean energy future for Hawaii. The companies will be hosting a series of 13 open house informational meetings across Hawaii to introduce residents to NextEra Energy and the benefits of the companies’ pending merger as well as to provide members of the public with the opportunity to provide input directly to company officials.

On Molokai, the open house will take place on April 9 at Kaunakakai School Cafeteria from 5 to 8 p.m.…

Heritage Rodeo Tickets Available

Molokai Ranch News Release

Molokai Ranch will be hosting the Molokai Ranch Heritage Rodeo on Saturday, April 25 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Molokai Ranch in Maunaloa. In addition to the wide range of rodeo festivities, there will be a special live performance by Hawaii music icons and Grammy Award-winning artists Henry Kapono, John Cruz, and Brother Noland, who together call themselves the “Rough Riders.”

Pre-sale tickets are now available from various Molokai locations. The price for advance tickets is $10. Tickets will be $12 at the door the day of the rodeo.

Young Brothers Contributes to Halau

Moana’s Hula Halau News Release

Through the Young Brother’s Community Support Program, Moana’s Hula Halau has been awarded gratis shipment of one of our vehicles round trip to Hilo for the Merrie Monarch Festival.

As Molokai residents, we are all aware that traveling to the neighbor islands is very costly for us with airfare, hotel, car rental, etc.  We are traveling with 54 people including dancers, Kumu, Ho`opa`a, musicians, helpers, and chaperones.  After factoring in the costs of vehicle rentals for this undertaking, it was decided that shipment of our own 15 passenger vans would be more economical for us, so we are shipping three15 passenger vans to Hilo. …

A workshop about developing your child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be held on Molokai on Thursday, April 9. Eligibility has been determined for your child under the federal Department of Education’s Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Now you and your IEP team will be developing a plan for your child. Understand the steps to this process from beginning to end and how your child with a disability will benefit from his/her IEP.

Wind Quintet Coming to Molokai

Molokai will get a musical treat on March 30. The Spring Wind Quintet, recognized as one of the country’s leading wind quintets, will be playing a concert at Kaunakakai Elementary School Cafeteria at 6 p.m.

The Spring Wind Quintet has been a major force in the development of chamber music in Hawaii, and many new works have been composed and arranged especially for the group. The quintet has an extensive and varied repertoire earning several national grants and offers educational programs for all ages.

The Art of the Short Story

There will be an eight week creative writing course from March 24 to May 12 taught by internationally bestselling author and Molokai resident Brandon W. Jones, sponsored by the Molokai Arts Center (MAC).  This class will meet once a week at Kaunakakai School to learn and discuss the mechanics of effective story writing, with the goal of producing one short story by the end of eight weeks.

Brandon will be available to give individual guidance and feedback, and there will be optional group critique sessions.  While the course is designed as an eight-part whole, each class will focus on a fundamental element of the craft and can be taken on a drop-in basis. …

Celebrating the fourth year of Kula Kaiapuni Kauwela on Molokai, the program will once again be held this summer at Kualapu`u Public Charter School for students entering grades K-9 in the fall.  Teachers have been selected: Nahulu Maioho — grades six to eight, Kailana Ritte-Camara — grades four and five, Lokelani Han — grades two and three, and Uluhani Waialeale — grades Kindergarten and first grade. Manuwai Peters will be the site coordinator.

The dates for the 20-day program will be from June 9 through July 7 daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The Hawaiian language based curricula is designed to engage and excite students in land and ocean activities that emphasize the caring of Molokai resources.…

The Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, in collaboration with the Molokai Fire Task Force, will hold community input meetings to help develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for Molokai.  The meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kulana `Oiwi.

Wildfires have great impacts on Molokai residents and natural resources, affecting daily life like road closures, evacuations, post-fire flooding and tax payer dollars. Fires affect human health and safety, such as creating dust and smoke, impacting water quality and resident and firefighter safety. They also affect the ecosystem including watersheds, forests, coral reefs and fisheries.…
