Movie Night Raises Funds for Pavilion

Heart of Aloha Church News Release

Heart of Aloha Church invites the community to take part in a Free Family Movie Night on July 24 on their open air church property in Kualapu`u.  The featured movie is called “Little Boy” and is made possible through a partnership with Trinity Broadcasting Network.   Food booths will be open at 5:30 p.m. and will be selling popcorn, drinks, malasadas, and Chinese food plates with the movie following at 7:30 p.m.   Please bring your own mat, blanket, beach chair, etc. as these will not be provided.

Heart of Aloha is a non-denominational church located on the Island of Molokai and currently meets at Lanikeha Community Center in Hoolehua. …

Ho`ola Hou Scholarship Recipients

The MOM Hui News Release

Congratulations to this year’s 2015-2016 Ho`ola Hou Scholarship recipients: Kelsie Tanabe, Kamakalehiwa Purdy-Avelino, Lahela Tamanaha, Waipuna Paleka, Kiloaulani Ka`awa-Gonzales and Michaiah Soares.  Each individual will receive a total scholarship award of $1103 for the school year.

The Ho`ola Hou Community-Supported Scholarship Fund has been made possible through the MOM hui’s Annual Grassroots Benefit Concert, where 100 percent of the silent auction proceeds benefitted the fund. It is also funded by the Molokai Environmental Protection Fund, managed by the Tides Foundation, which “supports organizations that protect the Hawaiian island’s environment and enhance its community’s access to legal services, education, and environmental advocacy.”…

The Law Enforcement I Certificate of Competence consists of three classes and will take a minimum of two semesters to complete.  Upon completion, you will have the general academic knowledge, concepts, and theory pertaining to the criminal justice system.  The Law Enforcement I Certificate of Competence will prepare you for careers in law enforcement, private security or other fields related to administration of justice.…

An upcoming three-day training session for community and business leaders will offer FEMA certification and cover important information about coastal community resilience, natural disaster awareness, social media for response and recovery and leveraging tools for conducting damage assessments.

On Tuesday, July 21 from 8 a.m. to noon, a one-day training course will provide state and local government agency staff and other stakeholder groups with background on natural hazards.

Flood Risk Meeting for South Shore Residents

Residents of Kaunakakai and Molokai’s south shore areas are urged to attend a community meeting for those who may be affected by the new digital flood insurance rate maps (DFIRMs). The County of Maui, State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be holding the meetings on Molokai and Maui.

These new maps may impact residential flood risk ratings by changing flood insurance requirements when the DFIRM becomes effective on Nov. 4 of this year. The areas in Maui County that will be affected by these changes are Kihei, Waikapu, Kaunakakai and residents living on the south shore of Molokai.…

Imua Family Services is pleased to announce a new chapter in the agency’s rich 69 year history. As of July 2015, Imua Family Services will be providing Infant and Child Development Services to families and children on the island of Molokai, making the organization’s services available County wide with ongoing services on Maui and Lanai. Families on the island will be able to access Care Coordination Services, Speech Language Pathology, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Special Instruction, and General Education Training for keiki birth through 3.

Imua Family Services, through a contract with the State of Hawaii Department of Health Early Intervention Section, will open an office at the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC).…

For the second year in a row, Molokai Dispatch staff were honored at the Hawaii Excellence in Journalism Awards banquet recognizing the state’s outstanding journalism for 2014. The newspaper received three first place and one finalist award in several categories at a ceremony held in Honolulu on June 26.

The Hawaii chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) annually awards the state’s finest media coverage in newspaper, television, radio, magazine and web. Last year, the Dispatch earned one first place and four finalist awards for its coverage in 2013.

“We are grateful to the Molokai community for sharing your stories and honored to represent our island’s newspaper among the state’s best,” said Dispatch editor Catherine Cluett.…

The Fund for the Pacific Century, a charitable, nonprofit organization, is accepting applications for its 15th class of Pacific Century Fellows.  The program, modeled after the White House Fellows Program, is designed to recognize and encourage Hawaii’s future leaders.

The nine-month program will include approximately 30 of Hawaii’s most promising individuals from all segments of our community who are in their mid-20s to early 40s.  The fellows will be selected by an 18-member committee of prominent citizens based on their demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals and on having exhibited leadership qualities in their current professional, volunteer, and civic activities.…

Sarah Jenkins Named 2015 Ambassador of Aloha

Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation News Release

A collection of Hawaii’s most talented scholar athletes gathered today at Outrigger Canoe Club to accept scholarship funds from the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. The nonprofit awarded a total of $178,250 to 29 grantees and 44 scholarships to student athletes from 34 different high schools across six Hawaiian Islands.

Each year, the Foundation awards a $10,000 Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship to one individual that exemplifies outstanding skill and leadership in the classroom, in their chosen sport and in the community.

Sarah `Alohilani Jenkins was named the 2015 Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Ambassador of Aloha. With a GPA exceeding 4.0, Sarah graduated from Molokai High School’s class of 2015 and will be attending Duke University this fall.…
