Aha Kiole o Molokai News Release

The Maui County Planning Department started the review process for The Molokai Community Plan, which included many meetings of different groups and covered all aspects of Molokai. At first, the Molokai community was not participating, so the Aha Kiole got involved and held five meetings in each of the five Moku to let people know what was going on, how important the Molokai Community Plan was and ask people what they wanted to put into the plan.

Last week, the plan came before the Molokai Planning Commission for the final of many Commission meetings. The Aha Kiole o Molokai, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, UH Law School and many in the Molokai community joined forces to make sure the mana`o of our community was pa`a in the plan.…

The Hawaiian value ho`omaika`i, is to have a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness. Gratitude is a learned behavior, and we can teach keiki about ho`omaika`i by our good examples and the examples of others around them. Developing an attitude of gratitude can take patience and practice. Help keiki to notice the many things around us that we can be thankful for: family and friends, a healthy body, a place to live, food for our table, the beautiful sky and ocean, and so much more. Talk about thankfulness and why it’s important. Children who learn gratitude become more sensitive to the feelings of others and develop empathy and other life skills as they grow.…

Veterans Elect Officers

The annual membership meeting of the Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) organization was held on Friday, Nov. 6. The meeting was called to order by Commander Sam Makaiwi at 10 a.m., and there were 32 members in attendance.

John Condello, veterans counselor will be at the Vets Center with attorneys on Friday, Nov. 20 from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and that afternoon they will be at the OHA office from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Watch commanders are still needed for Tuesday and Wednesday, secretary Allen Diorec informed everyone that we now have 98 lifetime and four annual paid members, total 102.…

Annual Pottery Show and Sale

Bennett Pottery will present its Annual Show and Sale on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kala`e Studio. The show will feature high-fired utilitarian stoneware and porcelain ware — items made for home and garden use. The objects are durable for daily use, and are safe for use in the oven, dishwasher and microwave. You are invited to come and see a wide array of unique, quality ceramics found nowhere else in Hawaii, right here on Molokai.

Dan Bennett has been creating unique hand crafted work on Molokai since 1974. He is a past mathematics teacher at Molokai High School and University of Hawaii, Maui College (UHMC) Molokai, and currently teaches ceramics at the Molokai Arts Center for adults, and classes for credit through UHMC.…

Services for Those with Disabilities

On Nov. 12, the Molokai Community Children’s Council (CCC) put on a workshop regarding data keeping and the importance of data keeping for individuals with disabilities. The speakers were Verna Waikiki for Hawaii Disability Rights Center and Yolanda Tanielu, Parent Co-Chair of Molokai CCC. Yolanda has received state wide recognition for her program of data keeping based on her child with exceptions needs and spoke at the State Planning Proposal meeting several years ago. Look up ADA attorney near me online if you need help accessing your disability benefits or if you’re experiencing any form of discrimination.

Dawn Mains, principal of Molokai Middle School, was critical to the success of this Department of Education (DOE) driven presentation exemplifying the role of DOE and community agencies bonding together to better serve students and their families.…

`Aha Moku Advisory Seeks Feedback

The `Aha Moku Advisory Committee (AMAC) has scheduled a series of public meetings this month to seek comment from communities in `ahupua`a districts as it develops and adopts rules for its operation and administration.

Created by the Legislature in 2012 via Act 288, the `Aha Moku Advisory Committee is attached to the State Dept. of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and is mandated to bring the voices of the `ahupua`a communities forward to the Department on issues related to natural and cultural resources.

“AMAC may advise the DLNR on issues related to land and natural resources management through the ‘Aha Moku system of best management practices,” said Leimana DaMate, AMAC executive director.…

Chaminade Nonprofit Seminar

We invite you to take advantage of an opportunity to be educated on nonprofit matters and network with other on island nonprofits. Chaminade University has offered to do a nonprofit seminar on Molokai, similar to the ones they offer annually on Oahu.

The seminar will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the OHA Conference Room, Kulana `Oiwi. Normally the seminar costs $185 per person. However, in partnership with other local nonprofits, we are able to bring the seminar to Molokai free of charge to participants. Handouts will be provided by Chaminade.…

‘Sons of Halawa’ World Premiere

On Monday, Nov. 16 in Honolulu, “Sons of Halawa,” a locally produced 60-minute documentary, will have its World Premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF). The Molokai Premiere is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. under the tent at Hotel Molokai.

The story takes place in Molokai’s Halawa Valley and revolves around the life of Pilipo Solatorio. Now in his 70s, Pilipo is the last of his generation living in the isolated valley. The film follows him for two years as he searches for a successor to replace him as the carrier of Halawa’s cultural practices.…

Molokai Joins in Christmas Donation

This month, Molokai Baptist Church will serve as a Molokai collection site for Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The annual Samaritan’s Purse project is a favorite of many Molokai residents, families, churches and groups who spread joy to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with fun toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement.

$88K for Cultural and Environmental Education

Molokai Middle School, `O Hina I Ka Malama, Ke Kula Waena, Hawaiian Language Immersion Program received a $88,213 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for a project titled “Promoting Cultural Based Knowledge and Practices through Environmental Stewardship and Preservation.” The grant’s duration, August 2015 through August 2016, is being lead by Molokai Middle School Hawaiian Language Immersion Program Teacher and Principal Investigator, `Iolani Ku`oha.

“Our goal, through meaningful science-based outdoor experiences for students, is to instill the need for engaging in culture based knowledge that reflects community efforts on Molokai,” said Ku`oha. “In addition, we hope that increased science investigations that are relevant to students will help to increase their achievement on the Hawaii State Science Assessment.”…
