Punalau Pond Community Meeting

Molokai Land Trust News Release

The Molokai Land Trust (MLT), along with Sust’ainable Molokai, will be hosting a community meeting on Sept. 26 from 5:30-7 p.m. to begin a community visioning process for restoration of Punalau Pond, a 45-acre wetland on the south shore of Molokai.
MLT is a member of the Molokai Wetland Partnership, which was formed in 2020 with the goal of creating an interconnected network of diverse and resilient wetlands that support thriving traditional community practices, native flora and fauna, and ecosystem services in the face of climate change and sea-level rise. With the support of the partnership, MLT was awarded funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, National Coastal Resilience Fund to begin the development of plans for the restoration and functionality of Punalau Pond, and one other wetland on Molokaiʻs south shore.…

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention News Release

Join us on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. for the third annual Molokai Out of the Darkness Walk, at the Molokai Canoe Club. Our team of community volunteers, in collaboration with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Hawaii Chapter (AFSP) is organizing this suicide prevention and awareness event. Food and entertainment at the Veterans’ Center is to follow. Together, we can connect with the community to provide support, break the silence to talk about mental health, participate in purposeful activities, and offer other vital resources for our community.

After a week in Waiʻanae engaging with students and community, Hokuleʻa will depart Pokaʻi Bay and return to Sand Island. As the crew heads out of the bay, they will honor the late Twinkle Borge with an oli, pu and flower drop. The Hawaiian flag will be flown at half-staff along with a pink lei hulu on Hokuleʻa as the canoe sails along the Waiʻanae coast. The crew will also stop off-shore of Nanakuli to honor the community with pu and oli.

MEO Supports Suicide Prevention Month

Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO)’s Youth Services team participated in a ceremony Thursday marking September as Suicide Prevention Month in Maui County.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen read the proclamation. The event was organized by E Ola Hou Prevent Suicide Maui County Task Force and Mental Health America of Hawaii Maui County Branch, led by Danielle Bergan.

In his short talk, MEO Youth Services Director Dane Ka‘ae noted how suicide was a hush hush topic when he was growing up, but today “I can say the word ‘suicide.’ ” Ka’ae also noticed openness among youth on the topic of suicide.…

This is our foundation and an integral part of our identity that will continue to guide our efforts for generations, both on and off the mat. Founded in 2022, ʻAinapa’a Wrestling Team’s (AWT) mission is to instill core values such as growth, knowledge, discipline, commitment, and community in every wrestler.  We are dedicated to offering opportunities that can help each wrestler achieve their personal goals as well as AWT’s long-term goals. 

Currently, AWT serves over 30 wrestlers, ages 5 to 16, throughout the year. We’ve also forged valuable partnerships with wrestling clubs and programs on Maui, Kauai, Oahu, and Las Vegas as well with prominent coaches and wrestlers.  These…

We hold a book sale quarterly to raise funds to fill needs the library has that are not covered by state library funds. Your purchases are so important and appreciated.

We happily accept donations of books from the public for these sales, but the following are items we cannot use and they will be discarded.

Please do not donate these items: cassette and VHS tapes, damaged materials, broken spines, loose pages, hi-lighted, written in or torn materials with excessive discoloration, moldy, dirty or insect-infested items, magazines, textbooks, encyclopedias, medical and law books over five years old, government reports, pamphlets or binders.…

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) is proud to announce the selection of organizations for its Community Stewardship and Regenerative Experiences programs, two key initiatives under the Community Tourism Collaboratives.

A 2024 technical needs assessment completed by HTA revealed key capacity-building activities that HTA could focus on to advance a regenerative tourism model for Hawaii. Following a highly competitive application and rigorous evaluation process, 24 organizations have been chosen to participate in these transformative capacity-building programs aimed at fostering regenerative tourism and preserving Hawaii’s cultural and natural resources.

Local Students Named to Pacific University Dean’s List

Several Molokai students have been named to the spring 2024 Dean’s List at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Dean’s List recognizes undergraduate students in Pacific’s colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Education who earn a grade-point average of at least 3.70 and complete 12 or more graded hours.

Saije Aiana, Kamalu Kaawa Richardson and Reese Raguindin are all on the spring 2024 Dean’s List.
