Filming Nonprofit Holds Logo Contest

Ke Ala Pono News Release

Ke Ala Pono (The Righteous Path) is a local nonprofit that is that provides film and editing experiences for community members that are interested. We would like announce a contest for the creation of our logo. The contest is open to all ages and will run through the month of November.

Ke Ala Pono is looking for a design that can be displayed on our mobile trailer, films and paperwork. All submitted logos will become the property of our organization. Our mission is “to preserve the culture, heritage and natural resources of the island of Molokai and the State of Hawaii through advocacy, outreach and education by providing programs that benefit all sectors of the community.”…

Butterflies Are Back

Friends of Molokai Library News Release

If you checked the Butterfly Garden at the Library this summer, you may have noticed that there weren’t any Monarchs flying around.  It turns out that there is a Monarch “season” in Hawaii… who knew?

According to the Butterfly Society of Hawaii, the season is approximately October to May.  But we are seeing caterpillars on the crown flower, and Monarchs and Lesser Grass Blues feeding on the milkweed, rattlepod, balloon plant and sun drop plants.

In our home garden, we also have the Gulf Fritillary, Citrus Swallowtail, Large Orange Sulphur and Cabbage butterflies back.  The Fritillary is about the same color at the Monarch, but the flight pattern is much different.  …

November Events for Veterans

Our Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) have a lot of activities for our veterans and community for the month of November.  On Thursday, Nov. 5, our state VA Counselor, John Condello, will be at our center from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for appointments only by calling (808) 433-0420.

On Friday, Nov. 6, at our center will be holding our general membership meeting from 10 a.m. to noon for election of board officers and directors for the next two years.  Our nomination committee chairperson, Jeanette Kahalehoe, is currently accepting interested veterans for all positions. …

Wellhead Protection Project

County Dept. of Water Supply News Release

The Maui County Department of Water (DOW) Supply initiated the “Wellhead Protection Project” in order to protect the quality of our community’s drinking water wells. The land areas that could contribute water and pollutants to our drinking water sources have been mapped as “Wellhead Protection Areas.” If pollutants are spilled or discharged in these land areas, they could filter through the soil to the groundwater and be drawn into a drinking water well. The DOW, in collaboration with the community, developed a protection strategy and drafted a Wellhead Protection Overlay District Ordinance.

‘Kumu Hina’ Film Looks at Tradition in Modern Hawaii

It’s been a long-time coming, but two films that bring Hawaiian culture to life in powerful new ways are finally going to screen on Molokai.

“Kumu Hina” is a film produced by Pacific Islanders in Communications about the struggle to maintain traditional culture and values within the Westernized society of modern Hawaii.  The film’s entertaining stories are told through the perspective of Hina Wong-Kalu, a remarkable native Hawaiian mahu, or transgender, teacher who inspires a young girl to claim her place as leader of the school’s all-boy hula troupe as she searches for love and a fulfilling romantic relationship in her own life, so she can enjoy intimacy with her partner sometimes learning from sex toy blogs for this purpose.…

12 Molokai Businesses at County Product Show

At this year’s second annual Made in Maui County Festival, we have 12 booths occupied by Molokai businesses. The Kuha`o Business Center (KBC) is excited to not only have businesses returning to the festival from last year, but to be adding to the list of Molokai businesses that will be represented. The festival takes place Nov. 6-7 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului.

The event will boast a larger format with more products, more vendors, more food trucks, and more reasons to buy local. Nearly 140 product vendors and food trucks are confirmed for this year.…

Our Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) are looking forward to Tuesday, Oct. 13, when our Sen. Mazie Hirono, who is a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs in Washington D.C., will be coming to our center from 9:30 to 11 a.m., to inform our veterans and discuss any concerns. Clay Park, who is a board member of the Governor’s Veterans Committee and founder of the Uncles and Aunties Program, will also be here to provide VA updates and assist with any VA issues.

On the same day, Yvonne Geesey, health promotion disease prevention program manager with Department of Veterans Affairs, will be at our center from 8 a.m.…

Upcoming 100K Bike Race in January

Kualapu`u School invites all local cycling enthusiasts to start getting ready for this year’s Molokai Metric events. Two races are planned this year. In addition to the 100K ride, race organizers are staging an Uphill Prelim on the Kalae Highway. The Uphill Prelim is five miles in length climbing from Holomua Junction to Kalaupapa Lookout. This event opens the Martin Luther King weekend of activities. The Uphill race begins Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. from the Surf Shack. Afterwards, riders will be taking a group ride to preview a 12-mile section of the following day’s Molokai Metric course.…

Continuing Success for Robotics Teams

MMS STEM Robotics News Release

Molokai Middle School’s STEM Robotics Team 434 opened their 2015-2016 VEX IQ Robotics year, bringing home first, second and third place finishes in the first two tournaments of the season on Oahu and Maui.

On Sept. 5, Team 434K Kalo Farmers and Team 434M Menehune Farmers traveled to Island Pacific Academy in Kapolei, Oahu for the 2015 aio Aloha VEX IQ Tournament. After the qualifications round, Team Kalo Farmers was ranked sixth while Team Menehune Farmers was ranked eighth. Going into the finals round, the Kalo Farmers were partnered with fifth place Mililani Masters while the Menehune Farmers were partnered with seventh place Castle Knights.…
